THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC ACADEMY OF SPORTS MEDICINE IS THE OLDEST PRIMARY CARE BASED SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALTY. IT WAS CHARTERED IN 1976 TO FULFILL THE MISSION OF A BRANCH OF THE HEALING ARTS PROFESSION WHICH UTILIZES A HOLISTIC, COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO THE PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS, AND MANAGEMENT OF SPORT AND EXERCISE-RELATED INJURIES, DISORDERS, DYSFUNCTIONS AND DISEASE PROCESSES. THE PURPOSE OF THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC OF SPORTS MEDICINE IS TO ADVANCE A MUTUALLY RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIP AMOUNT DEDICATED, COMPETENT SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALISTS, AND TO PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FOR ITS MEMBERS, ALLIED HEALTH SPORTS MEDICINE PROFESSIONALS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO ESTABLISH AND PROMOTE FITNESS AND EXERCISE GUIDELINES, AND TO GUIDE HEALTH CARE POLICY RELATING TO WELLNESS, PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND SPORTING EVENTS; AND A COLLEGIAL ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH PHYSICIANS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS CAN EXPAND THEIR CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND ENHANCE THEI

IN 2019 THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC ACADEMY OF SPORTS MEDICINE HAD A TOTAL OF 637 MEMBERS, 323 MEMBERS WHO PAID DUES AND 314 MEMBERS WHO DID NOT PAY DUES, WHICH INCLUDES 304 STUDENT MEMBERS. THE ANNUAL CLINICAL CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN MAY 2018 IN AUSTIN TX AND 284 REGISTERED FOR THE CONFERENCE. THE ACADEMY ALSO PARTICIPATED AS A CME PROVIDER AT THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC ASSOCIATION'S OMED CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER 2019 IN BALTIMORE MD. THE ACADEMY IS ALSO A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE CLINICAL JOURNAL OF SPORTS MEDICINE AND ACSM TEAM PHYSICIAN POSITION STATEMENTS.


THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC ACADEMY OF SPORTS MEDICINE PROVIDES LEADERSHIP FOR ITS MEMBERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING STANDARDS AND ITS CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THE SOCIETY, WITH A CONSORTIUM OF INTERNATIONAL SPORTS MEDICINE SOCIETIES, PUBLISHES A PEER- REVIEWED JOURNAL, "CLINICAL JOURNAL OF SPORTS MEDICINE" BI-MONTHLY.
