THE SOCIETY FOR MUCOSAL IMMUNOLOGY (SMI) WAS FORMED IN 1987 TO ADVANCE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION RELATED TO THE FIELD OF MUCOSAL IMMUNOLOGY. TODAY THE SOCIETY REPRESENTS A DIVERSE GROUP OF MORE THAN 600 SCIENTISTS AND CLINICIANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

"MUCOSAL IMMUNOLOGY" IS THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF SMI AND IS PUBLISHED BY NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR BOTH BASIC AND CLINICAL SCIENTISTS TO DISCUSS ALL ASPECTS OF IMMUNITY AND INFLAMMATION INVOLVING MUCOSAL TISSUES. THE JOURNAL REFLECTS THE INTEREST OF SCIENTISTS STUDYING GASTROINTESTINAL, PULMONARY, NASOPHARYNGEAL, ORAL, OCULAR, AND GENITOURINARY IMMUNOLOGY THROUGH THE PUBLICATION OF ORIGINAL RESEARCH ARTICLES, SCHOLARLY REVIEWS AND TIMELY COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS, AND LETTERS.
THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MUCOSAL IMMUNOLOGY IS A BIENNIAL CONFERENCE THAT BRINGS BASIC SCIENTISTS, CLINICAL RESEARCHERS, AND INDUSTRY RESEARCHERS WHO WORK AT MUCOSAL SURFACES TOGETHER TO DISCUSS COMMON AND UNIQUE PATHWAYS OF IMMUNITY AND INFLAMMATION AND TO ULTIMATELY ACCELERATE AND IMPROVE PATIENT CARE. ADDITIONALLY, AN ANNUAL MEETING OCCURS EACH YEAR TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF BASIC, TRANSLATIONAL, AND CLINICAL STUDIES RELATING TO MUCOSAL IMMUNOLOGY AT MEETINGS OUTSIDE OF THE SMI BIENNIAL CONGRESS. THESE MEETINGS MAY ALSO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR SOCIETY BUSINESS TO BE CONDUCTED.
