THE SAUK COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY TOOK IN 2180 ANIMALS IN 2021. ANIMAL CONTROL TOOK 394 CALLS, HANDLED 120 BITE CASES, AND IMPOUNDED 239 ANIMALS. TO ENSURE WE DO NOT HAVE TO EUTHANIZE HEALTHY, ADOPTABLE ANIMALS, 421 ANIMALS WERE TRANSFERRED TO OTHER SHELTERS AND RESCUE GROUPS. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS WE CURTAILED OUR BITE-PREVENTION PROGRAM, EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION, ADOPT-A-THONS, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH. WE PUBLISHED TWO NEWSLETTERS THAT WAS SENT TO OVER 6,000 HOUSEHOLDS. THE NEWSLETTER ADVERTISES THE SOCIETY'S SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC AND PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH ARTICLES.
WE ASSISTED 20 INDIVIDUALS WITH VETERINARY SERVICES THROUGH THE JOSH DIEHM MEMORIAL FUND FOR $2,778 TO HELP OWNERS WHO HAVE FALLEN ON DIFFICULT TIMES KEEP THEIR PETS, THREE PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN IN PLACE SINCE JANUARY 2012: PET PARTERSHIP, SAFEKEEPING, AND A PET FOOD PANTRY. THESE PROGRAMS HELP LOW-INCOME COUNTY RESIDENTS WHO ARE TEMPORARILY UNABLE TO CARE FOR THEIR PETS OR WHO HAVE EMERGENCY PET FOOD OR HOUSING NEEDS. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP RESIDENTS KEEP THEIR PETS RATHER THAN GIVING THEM AWAY OR SURRENDERING THEM TO THE SHELTER. IN 2021, WE ASSISTED 115 INDIVIDUALS THROUGH THESE PROGRAMS AND 112 PETS.
IN AN EFFORT TO CURB PET OVERPOPULATION, THE SAUK COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY OPERATES THE AREA'S ONLY LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC. DESPITE COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, WE CONTINUED TO OPERATE THE CLINIC ON A REDUCED SCHEDULE. WE SPAYED OR NEUTERED 836 CATS IN 2021. WE PROVIDE LOW COST VACCINES FOR 119 CATS AND 71 DOGS AND MICROCHIPPED 5 DOGS AND 6 CATS.
