HANDS ACROSS THE WATER (HATW) PROVIDES A SPECTRUM OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES, INCLUDING IN-HOME PARENT EDUCATION AND SUPPORT, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES, AND FOSTER CARE AND ADOPTION SERVICES.

STATEWIDE FOSTER CARE CONTRACTED THROUGH THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES: FOSTER CARE PROGRAMS ASSIST FAMILIES AND CHILDREN WITH A GOAL OF ENSURING THAT CHILDREN ARE SAFE, HEALTHY, AND CARED FOR IN THEIR FAMILY OF ORIGIN WHENEVER POSSIBLE. IN 2021, 150 YOUTH WERE SERVED IN THE FOSTER CARE PROGRAM, WITH 72 YOUTH ACHEIVING PERMANENCY IN THAT SAME YEAR THROUGH RETURN HOME, GUARDIANSHIP, OR ADOPTION.
ADOPTION SERVICES, INCLUDING STATE WARD ADOPTION, INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION, AND INFANT ADOPTION SERVICES: STATE WARD ADOPTION MATCHES CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE WHO ARE UNABLE TO RETURN HOME WITH ADOPTIVE FAMILIES INCLUDING RELATIVES OF THE CHILD, NON-RELATIVE FOSTER PARENTS, OR A RECRUITED ADOPTIVE FAMILY. INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION PRIMARILY ASSISTS US CITIZEN FAMILIES SEEKING TO ADOPT FAMILY MEMBERS OR UNRELATED CHILDREN FROM PROGRAM COUNTRIES INCLUDING MEXICO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, AND BULGARIA. HATW ALSO ASSISTS FAMILIES INTERESTED IN ADOPTING FROM CHINA THROUGH A PARTNER PROGRAM. INFANT ADOPTION SERVICES INCLUDES FREE, CHOICE-BASED, NON-COERCIVE COUNSELING TO PREGNANT WOMEN WHO ARE CONSIDERING MAKING A VOLUNTARY ADOPTION PLAN. 8 WOMEN RECEIVED COUNSELING IN 2021. IN 2021, HATW COMPLETED A TOTAL OF 36 ADOPTIONS AMONG OUR THREE PROGRAMS.
IN HOME SERVICES: CONTRACTED THROUGH MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. HATW PROVIDED INTENSIVE PARENT EDUCATION AND SUPPORTIVE VISITATION SERVICES TO FAMILIES AT RISK OF HAVING THEIR CHILDREN REMOVED OR WHO ARE WORKING TOWARDS REUNIFICATION FROM FOSTER CARE. ENDING IN 2021, 102 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED IN HOME PARENT EDUCATION SERVICES TO IMPROVE HOME SAFETY AND CAPACITY AS PARENTS AND FAMILIES.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH: HATW PROVIDES COUNSELING SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL FOCUS ON TRAUMA, GRIEF AND LOSS, FOSTER CARE AND ADOPTION ISSUES, AND MARITAL, PARENTING, AND ADJUSTMENT ISSUES. NUMEROUS INSURANCE PLANS ARE ACCEPTED INCLUDING SEVERAL MEDICAID HMOS, AS WELL AS SLIDING SCALE AND PRIVATE PAY CLIENTS. IN 2021, 80 CHILDREN AND ADULTS BENEFITTED FROM BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES AT HATW.
