JIMIRIS MISSION IS TO ADVANCE THE NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON RACE, ALLEVIATE EDUCATIONAL AND RESIDENTIAL SEGREGATION, AND INSPIRE INDIVIDUALS TO TAKE ACTIONS THAT FURTHER RACIAL HEALING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.

JIMIRIS YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM BRINGS TOGETHER MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT RACIAL, ETHNIC, AND GEOGRAPHIC BACKGROUNDS AND GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO FORM LIFELONG, CROSS-RACIAL FRIENDSHIPS THAT ARE OTHERWISE DENIED TO THEM BY SEGREGATION. IN 2021, JIMIRI LAUNCHED A SUCCESSFUL, 8-WEEK PILOT PROGRAM IN DETROIT WITH MORE THAN 30 MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM EIGHT SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE METROPOLITAN AREA. THE STUDENTS GATHERED ON A WEEKLY BASIS AT DETROITS WRIGHT MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY WHERE THEY JOINED SMALL, RACIALLY DIVERSE GROUPS. EACH GROUP WAS LED BY A PAID STAFF OF HIGH-SCHOOL AND COLLEGE FACILITATORS WHO WERE TRAINED BY PROFESSIONALS WITH EXPERTISE ON ISSUES OF RACE AND RACISM.
