OPERATION OF ANIMAL SHELTER
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE SHELTER PROVIDES HOUSING AND CARE FOR HUNDREDS OF SURRENDERED OR STRAY ANIMALS EACH YEAR. THE ORGANIZATION COOPERATES WITH LOCAL CLINICS, VETERINARIANS, THE CITY AND COUNTY TO PROVIDE LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER SERVICES. THE SHELTER DOES NOT EUTHANIZE ANY ADOPTABLE ANIMALS DUE TO LENGTH OF STAY. DUE TO SOMETIMES EXCESS CAPACITY, THE SHELTER IS ABLE TO ASSIST OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND LOCALITIES, SUCH AS INDIAN RESERVATIONS, IN FINDING HOMES FOR THEIR ANIMALS AS WELL. IN ADDITION TO CARING FOR ANIMALS, THE ORGANIZATION DOES PUBLIC OUTREACH AND INFORMATION TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF HUMANE ANIMAL PRACTICES. IN 2021, THE SHELTER WAS ABLE TO TAKE IN A TOTAL OF 979 ANIMALS (491 DOGS, 333 CATS, AND 155 MISC OTHER SMALL ANIMALS). OF THESE, 155 WERE RETURNED TO THEIR OWNERS AND 737 WERE ADOPTED OUT TO NEW HOMES. THE COVID PANDEMIC IN 2020 AND 2021 RESULTED IN CANCELLATION OF VIRTUALLY ALL FUNDRAISING EVENTS. IN MAY OF 2022 THE FUR BALL, THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENT, RESUMED AND WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. IN JUNE OF 2022 THERE WAS CATASTROPHIC FLOODING OF THE NEARBY YELLOWSTONE RIVER. THE SHELTER WAS BADLY DAMAGED IN THE FLOOD AND WAS FORCED TO CLOSE UNTIL IT CAN BE REPAIRED OR REBUILT. ALL OF THE SHELTER ANIMALS WERE RESCUED. OTHER LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTERS AND THE COMMUNITY HAVE BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE IN COPING WITH THIS SITUATION AND FINDING TEMPORARY ALTERNATIVES TO PROVIDING THE NECESSARY CARE.
