THE LIGHTHOUSE, HEAVENTRAIN BUS COMPLETED IT'S 38TH YEAR IN 2019 AND REACHES AN ESTIMATED 400 CHILDREN TWICE A MONTH FROM MAY THROUGH DECEMBER. THE BUS OPERATES IN CLEVELAND'S CENTRAL PUBLIC HOUSING NEIGHBORHOODS. THE EMPHASIS IS ON EARLY SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, FAMILY COMMITMENT AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. A HEALTHY LUNCH IS ALSO PROVIDED IN ADDITION TO INTERACTING WITH THE CHILDREN AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. ON THE LAST OUTING OF THE YEAR, HOT MEALS AND CHRISTMAS PRESENTS ARE GIVEN TO ALL WHO COME TO THE BUS WHICH IS PARKED IN FIVE DIFFERNT LOCATIONS NEAR THE PUBLIC HOUSING NEIGHBORHOODS. TYPICALLY, WE SEE OVER 600 KIDS AND CAREGIVERS. WE WERE NOT ABLE TO CONDUCT THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES IN 2020 DUE TO THE COVID19 RESTRICTIONS. HOWEVER, WE HAVE RESUMED THEM IN 2021.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS: LIGHTHOUSE PROVIDES THE COACHING/TRAINING, UNIFORMS, TRAVEL NEEDS AS WELL AS TOURNAMENT ENTRY FEES FOR OUR AAU BASKETBALL TEAM. THE PLAYERS ARE FROM THE LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS FROM GRADE 6 TO 8. THESE YOUNG PLAYERS ARE ALSO TAUGHT TEAM BUILDING, AND SELF AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS. LIGHTHOUSE ALSO HAS A MENTOR PROGRAM AT EAST TECH HIGH SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL'S FIFTH PERIOD. LIGHTHOUSE OFFERS ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING AS WELL AS HELPING TO DEVELOP READING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS. GRADES 9 THROUGH 12 ARE ALL INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM.
