IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION OFFERING EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP TO BUILD VIBRANT COMMUNITIES IN THE GREAT PLAINS REGION, BY REINVIGORATING THE COMMONWEALTH WHICH FORM THE FOUNDATION FOR HUMAN AND NATURAL COMMUNITIES. OUR REGION'S COMMONWEALTH CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS WATER AND MINERAL CYCLE, RENEWABLE ENERGY, EDUCATION, HEALTH ANBD RECREATIN, THE ARTS, HISTORY, A SENSE OF PLACE, WILDLIFE, THE FOODSHED AND SPIRITUALITY. THESE ARE 12 ESSENTIAL FOUNDATIONS FOR COMMUNITY VITALITY. OGALLALA COMMONS FOCUSES ON 4 ACTIVITIES TO REGENERATE THESE COMMONWEALTHS: 1. BUILDING A COLLABORATIVE NETWORK; 2. WORKFORCE & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: IN 2021, OGALLALA COMMONS, INC., (OCI) CONTINUED OUR COMMUNITY INTERNSHIP & APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM BY PROVIDING WORK EXPERIENCE, SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND LOCAL CAREER EXPLORATION FOR A TOTAL OF 46 INTERNS AND 5 APPRENTICES, CONSISTING OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, COLLEGE AND OLDER ADULTS IN 4 STATES. ADDITIONALLY, OCI LAUNCHED A WORKFORCE & LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE PILOT GROUP, CONSISTING OF 8 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SILVERTON, TEXAS AND VILAS, COLORADO SCHOOLS - IN ORDER TO INCREASE PLACE-BASED LEARNING AND WORKFORCE.
STEWARDING NATURAL RESOURCES: OCI CARRIED OUT NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION EDUCATION BY CONDUCTING 7 PLAYA FESTIVALS AND RIVER FESTIVALS IN TEXAS THAT INVOLVED ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND EDUCATED MORE THAN 400 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. IN ADDITION, OCI CONDUCTED 4 PLAYA FIELD DAYS IN TEXAS THAT IMPACTED 100 ATTENDEES, WHILE CONDUCTING 3 STEWARDING OUR AQUIFER FIELD DAYS THAT WERE ATTENDED BY 86 ATTENDEES.
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM: OCI CONTINUED ITS WORK IN YOUTH ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS IN 6 COLORADO RURAL COUNTIES (BACA, BENT, CHEYENNE, KIOWA, OTERO AND PROWERS COUNTIES). OCI ALSO CONDUCTED COMMONWEALTH ACADEMIES IN THE SOUTHEAST TEXAS PANHANDLE REGION (SWISHER, BRISCOE AND HALL COUNTIES), AND HELD TWO YOUTH ENTREPENEUR FAIRS - ONE FOR SOUTHEAST COLORADO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ANOTHER FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE THREE SOUTHEAST TEXAS PANHANDLE COUNTIES. IN ADDITION, OCI LAUNCHED A VIRTUAL E-CLUB TO FOSTER CONTINUED EDUCATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEURS.
OTHER PROGRAMS: REBUILDING LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS: OCI MAINTAINED ITS LOCAL LLANO PROJECT FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION REGARDING LOCAL FOOD PRODUCERS AND OPTIONS FOR PROCURING LOCALLY GROWN, NUTRIENT-DENSE FOOD IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE-SOUTH PLAINS, WHICH INCLUDED CONDUCTING 2 LOCAL FOOD SUMMITS IN TEXAS AND A BUS TOUR AND LOCAL FOOD SUMMIT IN COLORADO, TO REBUILD THE ARKANSAS RIVER REGIONAL FOODSHED.
