Part 3
WORKING IN THE RURAL VILLAGES OF EASTERN KENYA IN 2018, WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THE FOLLOWING: PROVIDED FOOD SUPPORT TO APPROXIMATELY 400 ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. THIS AMOUNTS TO OVER 40,000 4.4 LB. BAGS OF MAIZE MEAL AND OVER 65,000 LBS. OF BEANS. PAID SCHOOL FEES AS NEEDED TO KEEP CHILDREN IN SCHOOL IN BOTH PRIMARY SCHOOL AND SECONDARY SCHOOL, AND GRADUATED MANY STUDENTS INTO COLLEGE AND INTO POLY-TECHNICAL SCHOOLS. SUPPLIED SCHOOL UNIFORMS FOR ALL ORPHANS SO THAT THEY COULD ATTEND SCHOOL AND NOT BE SENT HOME DUE TO INABILITY TO BUY A REQUIRED UNIFORM. CONTINUED PROVIDING SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND SCHOOL BOOKS TO THE ORPHANS AS NEEDED. CONTINUED PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE FOR THESE ORPHANS AS NEEDED. AGAIN, SPONSORED MOTIVATIONAL SEMINARS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND GOAL SETTING FOR THE CHILDREN CONDUCTED BY LOCAL DEPT. OF EDUCATION STAFF. CONTINUED THE TREE PLANTING PROJECT WITH THE CHILDREN IN WHICH THEY RECEIVE A SEEDLING TREE ONCE EACH QUARTER TO PLANT AND CARE FOR IN THEIR VILLAGE COMMUNITY TO BEGIN TO REVERSE THE DEFORESTATION PROBLEM AND TEACH ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY. AGAIN, SPONSORED AND SUPERVISED SEVERAL "HUT BUILDING PROJECTS" IN WHICH THE COMMUNITY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES COME TOGETHER TO BUILD A NEW HUT FOR A FAMILY THAT IS IN NEED OF A NEW HOME. CONTINUED TO PROVIDE AGRICULTURAL TRAINING TO THE CAREGIVER FAMILIES OF THE ORPHANS IN OUR PROGRAM. AND INTRODUCED A NEW SMALL SCALE FAMILY GARDEN PROJECT CALLED BALCONY GARDENS. LAUNCHED IN EARLY 2016, AN INCOME PRODUCING, GOAT BREEDING PROJECT WITH THE LOCAL VILLAGE FAMILIES IN LANGO BAYA DISTRICT. THE PROJECT RELIES ON EACH FAMILY TO BUILD A GOOD QUALITY, ABOVE GROUND, GOAT ENCLOSURE, AFTER WHICH THEY ARE LOANED THE SERVICES OF A LARGE, MALE GALANA GOAT TO BREED WITH THEIR SMALLER, LOCAL FEMALE GOATS. ONCE THIS FIRST GROUP OF FEMALES GIVES BIRTH AND THE OFFSPRING GROW TO BREEDING AGE, THE LARGER OFFSPRING GOATS ARE THEN BRED WITH A DIFFERENT MALE GALANA GOAT TO CREATE A LARGER SECOND GENERATION OFFSPRING. THIS PROCESS IS REPEATED TWO MORE TIMES, AT WHICH TIME THEY HAVE AN ALMOST PURE GALANA HERD OF FEMALES, WHICH ARE ALMOST TWICE AS LARGE AS THE SMALLER LOCAL GOATS. THEY CAN NOW SELL THE LARGER FEMALE GOATS FOR THREE TIMES THE PRICE AS THEY PREVIOUSLY RECEIVED FOR THE SMALLER GOATS. THIS PRODUCES A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN INCOME FOR THESE FAMILIES. WHILE PREVIOUSLY, THEY MIGHT HAVE OWNED THREE OR FOUR SMALL LOCAL GOATS, WE TRAIN THEM TO MAINTAIN A HERD OF 15 OF THE LARGER GOATS. THIS BECOMES AN ONGOING SOURCE OF BUSINESS INCOME FOR THE FAMILIES. THE LANGO BAYA MISSION PURCHASES, CARES FOR AND LOANS THE MALE GALANA GOATS TO THE VILLAGE FAMILIES FOR THE BREEDING PROJECT. THE ABOVE WORK WAS CONDUCTED IN THE LANGO BAYA LOCATION, MALINDI DISTRICT, OF SOUTHEASTERN KENYA. THE WORK WAS COORDINATED WITH THE PRIESTS OF THE FRATERNITY OF THE MISSIONARIES OF MARY.
