FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM: THE PRIMARY PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT AND PRIORITIES FOR THE GLOBAL FOUNDATION FOR PEROXISOMAL DISORDERS IS TO CONVENE FAMILIES OF DIAGNOSED PATIENTS (PREDOMINANTLY NEWBORNS, INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN) FOR EDUCATIONAL, SUPPORT AND LINKAGE SERVICES. THIS WORK IS SUPPORTED THROUGH A DYNAMIC WEBSITE (REDESIGNED IN LATE 2021) WITH CONTENT REGULARLY VETTED AND UPDATED BY GFPD VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF TO GIVE PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS THE LATEST INFORMATION ABOUT DIAGNOSIS, IMMEDIATE CARE AND DISORDER MITIGATION, SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL RESEARCH GEARED TOWARD A CAREGIVER AUDIENCE, BEST AND EMERGING PRACTICES IN CARE, AND RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS TO INCREASE POTENTIAL IN PATIENTS. THE GFPD ALSO PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR SUPPORT THROUGH ONLINE FORUMS, WEBINARS, CONVENINGS FOR CAREGIVERS AND EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS ON MEDICAL CARE, SERVICE PROVISION AND LINKAGE TO OTHER RESOURCES. BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, ALMOST ALL OF THE PROGRAMMING WAS MOVED ONLINE AND VIRTUAL. THIS ACTUALLY CREATED GREATER ACCESS TO THE VIRTUAL MEET-UPS FOR FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS AND GREATER USAGE OF SERVICES BY EXPONENTIALLY MORE FAMILIES. FINALLY, OUR PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO LINK CAREGIVERS AND FAMILIES WITH ONE ANOTHER ALONG WITH OTHER MEDICAL, SCIENTIFIC AND PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL TO BEST CARE FOR THEIR PATIENTS WITH PEROXISOMAL DISORDERS. IN 2021, THE GFPD POSTPONED A CONFERENCE IT HOSTS EACH TWO YEARS FOR FAMILIES AND PRACTITIONERS, OPTING TO RESERVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUNDS TO PROVIDE DIRECT STIPENDS AND SUPPORT TO FAMILIES FOR A CONFERENCE SCHEDULED IN 2022.
RESEARCH:MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS: THE GFPD CONTINUES TO FUND RESEARCH AND MEDICAL CARE BEST PRACTICES FOR PATIENTS WITH PEROXISOMAL DISORDERS. CURRENTLY, THE GFPD FUNDS RESEARCH THROUGH A NUMBER OF ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTIONS INCLUDING THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, THE KENNEDY KRIEGER INSTITUTE, JACKSON LABORATORIES AND MCGILL UNIVERSITY IN MONTREAL. ADDITIONALLY, THE GFPD SUPPORTS A GROUP OF MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ADVISORS FROM AROUND THE WORK DEDICATED TO RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF TREATMENTS AND BEST PRACTICES. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STUDY THE GFPD HAS SUPPORTED AND PARTICIPATED IN IS A FULL-SCALE NATURAL HISTORY STUDY OF PEROXISOMAL DISORDER PATIENTS THROUGH MCGILL UNIVERSITY. THIS STUDY IS A CONTINUAL PROCESS TO UNDERSTAND THE SYMPTOMS AND SEVERITY OF THE DISORDERS IN VARIOUS PATIENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THE GFPD HAS HELPED TO ENROLL MORE THAN 200 IN THE STUDY. FINALLY, THE GFPD REGULARLY GIVES RESEARCH GRANTS IN COMBINATION WITH LARGER GRANTS THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND OTHER VARIOUS NATIONAL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAMS. PATIENT ADVOCACY AND NEWBORN SCREENING: THE GFPD ADVOCATES AND EDUCATES FOR ADVANCEMENTS IN NEWBORN SCREENING FOR GENETIC DISORDERS INCLUDING PEROXISOMAL DISORDERS. AT THE TIME OF THE FILING OF THIS DOCUMENT, 20 STATES HAVE ENACTED POLICIES FOR NEWBORN SCREENING. THE ORGANIZATION WILL CONTINUE INVESTING TIME AND RESOURCES INTO ENSURING FAMILIES HAVE THE BEST OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO MITIGATE LONG DIAGNOSTIC JOURNEYS WHEN NEWBORN SCREENING IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE.
