A GRASSROOTS MEMBERSHIP-BASED ORGANIZATION BUILDING POWER FOR LOW AND MODERATE-INCOME COMMUNITIES IN NEW YORK STATE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
WORKER'S RIGHTS: NYCC ADDRESSES THE CONCERNS OF LOW WAGE WORKERS BY EDUCATING THEM ABOUT THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS, FACILITATING HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAININGS, DEVELOPING LEADERS WHO CAN ADVOCATE ON THEIR OWN BEHALF, AND PROVIDING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAMS AND JOB TRAINING. NYCC ALSO SURVEYS WORKERS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES ON THE JOB AND THEN ISSUES REPORTS TO INFORM POLICYMAKERS ABOUT THE NEEDS OF THE WORKERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. WORKERS JOIN TOGETHER THROUGH NYCC TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS AND IMPROVE WORKING CONDITIONS.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING: NYCC HAS WORKED TO ADDRESS THE FORECLOSURE CRISIS, AND TO ADVOCATE FOR MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND TENANT RIGHTS. THROUGH KNOW YOUR RIGHTS CLINICS, ORGANIZING TENANT UNIONS, AND ORGANIZING TO ENSURE HOUSING POLICY MEETS THE NEEDS OF WORKING CLASS TENANTS AND UNHOUSED PEOPLE, NYCC WORKS TO ENSURE THAT EVERY NEW YORKER IS ABLE TO ACCESS A SAFE AND AFFORDABLE HOME.
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE - CLIMATE CHANGE AND INEQUALITY ARE THE TWO GREAT MORAL CRISES OF OUR TIME. LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES OF COLOR, WHO DO NOT HAVE MONEY AND POWER TO FALL BACK ON IN A DISASTER, ARE ALREADY HIT THE HARDEST. WE'RE FIGHTING FOR BOLD, TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE AT THE SCALE OF THE CRISIS, NOT THE INADEQUATE BABY STEPS THAT POLITICIANS AND CORPORATION LIKE TO BRAG ABOUT. OUR CHALLENGE IS MOVING RAPIDLY TO 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY WHILE CREATING GOOD UNION JOBS, ESPECIALLY FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. THAT'S HOW WE SAVE OUR FUTURE FROM CLIMATE CHANGE WHILE FIGHTING INEQUALITY.
