THE PRISON POLICY INITIATIVE CHALLENGES OVER-CRIMINALIZATION AND MASS INCARCERATION THROUGH RESEARCH, ADVOCACY AND ORGANIZING. WE SHOW HOW THE THE UNITED STATES EXCESSIVE AND UNEQUAL USE OF PUNISHMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL HARMS INDIVIDUALS AND UNDERMINES OUR COMMUNITIES AND NATIONAL WELL-BEING. THIS YEARS PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE 50-STATE EXPLAINER ON HOW TO INCREASE BALLOT ACCESS FOR PEOPLE DETAINED IN JAILS; A REPORT DETAILING THE WAYS THE PRISON LITIGATION REFORM ACT MAKES IT HARDER FOR INCARCERATED PEOPLE TO FILE AND WIN FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUITS; AND AN ANALYSIS OF HOW EACH STATE REDUCES JURY DIVERSITY BY EXCLUDING PEOPLE WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS. WE ALSO CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR HUMANE RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, AND HAVE PUBLISHED RESEARCH RELATED TO THE VACCINE ROLLOUT AMONG CORRECTIONAL STAFF AND INCARCERATED PEOPLE, POPULATION FLUCTUATIONS IN PRISONS AND JAILS, AND MECHANISMS THAT STATES CAN USE TO DECARCERATE IN DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
