PURPOSETHE CARLSBAD POLICE EXPLORER POST IS A PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT CAREERS IN THE FIELD OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIREFIGHTING. WE ARE CREATING A PATHWAY TO SUCCESS IN ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT RELATED CAREER SUCH AS A POLICE OFFICER, INVESTIGATOR, DISPATCHER, COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER, AND CRIMINALIST OR IN THE FIRE SERVICE AS A FIREFIGHTER AND PARAMEDIC. THE EXPLORER POST IS OPEN TO ANYONE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14 AND 21 YEARS OF AGE WHO IS INTERESTED IN STRENGTHENING THEIR MORAL CHARACTER AND DEVELOPING TOOLS TO BE AN ASSET IN ANY PROFESSION. THE EXPLORERS ATTEND BI-WEEKLY MEETINGS, WHERE THEY LEARN ABOUT THE MANY JOBS AVAILABLE TO THEM IN A CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT. GUEST SPEAKERS FROM CITY, COUNTY, STATE AND FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS ARE BROUGHT IN TO PROVIDE TRAINING ON NUMEROUS TOPICS. GUEST SPEAKERS HAVE INCLUDED PATROL OFFICERS, K9 HANDLERS, NARCOTICS DETECTIVES, GANG INVESTIGATORS, TRAFFIC-MOTOR OFFICERS, FBI AGENTS, BORDER PATROL AGENTS AND FIREMEN WHO SPECIALIZE IN FIRST AID & CPR. EXPLORERS LEARN THROUGH FIRST HAND ON THE JOB EXPERIENCES IN THE FIELD, WORKING NON-HAZARDOUS ASSIGNMENTS, ALONGSIDE POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREMEN. OUR EXPLORERS PROVIDE VALUABLE SERVICES NOT ONLY TO CARLSBAD RESIDENTS, BUT WORK THROUGHOUT SAN DIEGO COUNTY TO ASSIST MANY OTHER CITIES WITH SPECIAL EVENTS. CARLSBAD POLICE EXPLORERS PROVIDE DEPARTMENT TOURS AND PROVIDE COUNTLESS HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE (TO INCLUDE TRAFFIC CONTROL, DUI CHECKPOINTS AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS TO SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND UNDERPRIVILEGED YOUTHS). OUR EXPLORERS ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE RIDE-ALONG PROGRAM WHERE THEY CAN RIDE AS A PASSENGER IN A PATROL CAR WITH POLICE OFFICERS OR AS A PASSENGER ON A FIRE TRUCK TO GET A TASTE FOR WHAT THE JOB IS REALLY LIKE.ACCOMPLISHMENTSIN AUGUST OF 2016, 12 POLICE EXPLORERS ATTENDED A WEEK LONG LIVE-IN POLICE EXPLORER ACADEMY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO. THE POLICE EXPLORERS ADDED 11 NEW MEMBERS IN APRIL OF 2017, BRINGING THE TOTAL MEMBERSHIP TO 20. IN MAY OF 2017, 4 POLICE EXPLORERS PARTICIPATED IN A TWO-DAY EXPLORER COMPETITION SPONSORED BY THE ESCONDIDO POLICE DEPARTMENT.THE FIRE EXPLORER PROGRAM HAS 12 EXPLORERS. EIGHT FIRE EXPLORERS ATTENDED AN EXTENDED FORMAT FIRE EXPLORER ACADEMY HOSTED AT THE CARLSBAD SAFETY TRAINING CENTER.
