THE MISSION OF THE INLANDIA INSTITUTE IS TO RECOGNIZE, SUPPORT AND EXPAND ALL FORMS OF LITERARY ACTIVITIES THROUGH COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN INLAND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, THEREBY DEEPENING PEOPLE'S AWARENESS, UNDERSTANDING, AND APPRECIATION OF THIS UNIQUE, COMPLEX AND CREATIVELY VIBRANT REGION.

INLANDIA INSTITUTE FACILITATES YOUTH AND ADULT CREATIVE LITERACY/LITERARY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, WHICH SUPPORTS WRITERS OF ALL LEVELS AND ALL AGES THROUGH CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS THAT RANGE FROM FREE TO MINIMAL COST. PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, WORKSHOPS WERE HELD IN PHYSICAL VENUES, BUT WITH THE ADVENT OF SOCIAL DISTANCING, ALL WORKSHOPS WERE MOVED TO A VIRTUAL FORMAT. WORKSHOPS THAT WERE HELD THIS YEAR INCLUDE SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS LIKE MEMOIR AND FOOD WRITING TO WORKSHOPS FOR OUR NEIGHBORS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. NEW THIS YEAR IS A TEEN POET LAUREATE PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH RIVERSIDE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION. TOTAL NUMBER OF INDIVDUALS SERVED FROM THESE PROGRAMS FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2022 WERE 698 ADULTS AND 864 YOUTH.
INLANDIA INSTITUTE ALSO HAS A ROBUST PUBLICATIONS PROGRAM. THIS YEAR, WE PUBLISHED A MEMOIR, A NOVEL, AND TWO NEW SELECTIONS FOR THE HILLIARY GRAVENDYK PRIZE. WE ALSO ESTABLISHED A NEW PRIZE FOR LATINX/HISPANX/CHICANX WRITERS WRITING IN PROSE IN MEMORY OF THE LATE DR. ELIUD MARTINEZ. WE ALSO PUBLISHED A PHOTOGRAPHY AND ESSAY COLLECTION FOCUSED ON RIVERSIDE'S PREDOMINANTLY AFRICAN AMERICAN EASTSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD BY AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR SUSAN STRAIGHT. TOTAL PUBLICATIONS FOR YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2022 WERE 8 BOOKS.
INLANDIA INSTITUTE PRESENTS PUBLIC LITERARY AND CULTURAL EVENTS. AS WE MOVE AWAY FROM THE SHELTERING AT HOME WE HAVE MOVED OUR PROGRAMS TO A HYBRID FORMAT TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH IN-PERSON AND AT-HOME VIEWERS. WE HOSTED A SERIES OF HUMANITIES HOUR PRESENTATIONS FEATURING WRITERS ON PLACE, A PANEL PRESENTATION FEATURING NATIVE AMERICAN AUTHORS, AND A BOOK LAUNCH FOR SUSAN STRAIGHT'S LATEST NOVEL, MECCA, AT UCR ARTS. WE ALSO HOSTED A WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE THROUGH OUR OFFICE AT THE GARCIA CENTER FOR THE ARTS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ARTS CONNECTION, THE ARTS COUNCIL FOR SAN BERNARDINO. THESE PROGRAMS SERVED 4495 INDIVIDUALS FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2022.
INLANDIA INSTITUTE'S PROGRAMS HAVE MOVED BACK TO AN IN-PERSON FORMAT, BUT WITH THE ADDED BENEFIT OF LIVESTREAMING THANKS TO CARES-ACT FUNDING WHICH ALLOWED FOR THE PURCHASE OF AND TRAINING WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES.
