HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS IN THE HUD-SUBSIDIZED SUPPORTING HOUSING PROGRAM MUST HAVE A DISABILITY PHYSICAL HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH, HIV/AIDS, AND/OR SUBSTANCE USE ADDICTION, TO QUALIFY. THEY ALSO HAVE TO HAVE CUSTODY OF DEPENDENT CHILDREN OR BE AT LEAST SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT TO BE ACCEPTED. CLIENT HOMES ARE SCATTERED-SITE IN THE HILLTOP AREA OF PITTSBURGH, PA. IN 2021 THIS PROGRAM MERGED WITH THE PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAM. RECENTLY A FAMILY OF TWO MOVED INTO INDEPENDENT LIVING. DURING THEIR TIME HERE THE MOM WAS ABLE TO SAFELY RECOVER FROM A DEBILITATING STROKE THAT CAUSED PARTIAL PARALYSIS. NOT ONLY DID MOM RECOVER MOST OF HER FUNCTIONALITY, BUT SHE COMPLETED HER COLLEGE DEGREE WHILE HER SON MADE HIS OWN STRIDES IN PRIMARY SCHOOL.
THE EMPOWERMENT HOUSING PROGRAM IS A TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM FOR FAMILIES THAT DO NOT MEET HUD HOMELESSNESS DEFINITIONS. THE FAMILY MUST INCLUDE A CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 24. PARENT(S)/GUARDIAN(S) MUST BE WORKING AND/OR ATTENDING SCHOOL AND MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A DISABILITY. FAMILY MEMBERS MAY HAVE UNDOCUMENTED STATUS. ACCEPTANCE INTO THE PROGRAM IS SUBJECT TO AN INTAKE INTERVIEW. WE HAVE ACCEPTED FAMILIES INTO THIS PROGRAM WHO WERE FLEEING RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION, LIVING IN AN ABANDONED BUILDING WITH NO UTILITIES, HEALING AND RESTAIBILIZING AFTER THE SUDDEN DEATH OF A SPOUSE, AND MANY MORE ACUTE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT HAVE CHANGED THE TRAJECTORY OF A FAMILY'S LIFE. IN EMPOWERMENT HOUSING, THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES AND BARRIERS TO SUCCESS AND MOVE ON TO INDEPENDENT LIVING SITUATIONS.
SISTERS PLACE IS EXPLORING THE CONCEPT OF A SIP & SHOP, A NONPROFIT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE. IT WILL CONSIST OF A PART COFFEE SHOP (SIP) AND PART THRIFT BOUTIQUE (SHOP) THAT WILL SELL GOODS AND INCORPORATE A WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. THE AIM IS FOR THE PROGRAM TO BE SELF-SUSTAINING THROUGH COFFEE AND THRIFT SHOP SALES. REVENUE WOULD BE REINVESTED INTO SISTERS PLACE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. A BUSINESS PLAN AND CURRICULUM HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND FUNDING SOURCES ARE BEING EXPLORED.
