OUR 2020-21 SEASON, THOUGH DELIVERED VIRTUALLY DUE TO THE ONGOING COVID-19 PANDEMIC, CONTINUED THIS WORK. FROM OCTOBER 2020 - APRIL 2021, MYC HELD REHEARSALS VIRTUALLY, STUDYING OUR SEASON THEME ROOTED IN THE WORDS OF CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT LEADER ELLA BAKER, "GIVE LIGHT, AND PEOPLE WILL FIND A WAY." THIS THEME FOCUSED ON THE MANY WAYS THAT MUSIC HAS ILLUMINATED THE PATH OUT OF DARKNESS THROUGHOUT HISTORY AND LED US TO LIVELY AND FASCINATING CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR STUDENTS. THIS EXPERIENCE WAS, IN THE WORDS OF ONE LONGTIME MYC PARENT, "IMMENSE AND SUSTAINING AND LED TO AN OVERWHELMINGLY JOYFUL REUNION WHEN OUR CHOIRS FINALLY MET IN PERSON AGAIN FOR TWO OUTDOOR REHEARSALS IN A VARIETY OF MADISON PARKS IN MAY 2021.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION - MYC'S COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS HAVE INCLUDED POPULAR IN-SCHOOL CHOIRS SERVING AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE GROUP OF STUDENTS IN THE MADISON METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT; AN INTERGENERATIONAL CHOIR, JOINING THE VOICES OF TEENAGE MYC SINGERS WITH SENIOR RESIDENTS OF CAPITOL LAKES RETIREMENT COMMUNITY; CHORAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS, ENCOURAGING MUSICAL EXPLORATION FOR NEW SINGERS AT LUSSIER COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER, THE HMONG LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT SUMMER CAMP, AND ANNUAL SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY TOURS TO SCHOOLS AND RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT DANE COUNTY.
CONCERTS AND APPEARANCES - WE AGAIN HAD TO CANCEL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES DURING THE 2020-2021 SEASON, BUT RECORDED SEVERAL AUDIO/VIDEO PERFORMANCES, INCLUDING VIRTUAL COLLABORATIONS WITH OUR COLLEAGUES AT MADISON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO. WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO HOLD TWO IN-PERSON, MASKED, OUTDOOR REHEARSALS IN A VARIETY OF MADISON PARKS IN MAY 2021, AND IT WAS WONDERFUL TO HARMONIZE WITH OUR STUDENTS IN REAL LIFE ONCE AGAIN. FOR MANY FAMILIES, WEEKLY MYC REHEARSALS WERE A LIFELINE TO A PLACE OF JOYFUL LEARNING, COLLABORATION, AND SUPPORT.
