THE OREGON SOCIETY OF AMERICAN FORESTERS PROVIDES VALUABLE PROFESSIONAL, SCIENTIFIC, AND TECHNICAL FORESTRY INFORMATION TO MEMBERS AND INTERESTED PARTIES THROUGH AN ANNUAL MEETING AND VARIOUS CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS, AND FIELD TOURS. THE OREGON SAF SPONSORS OUTREACH PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS. THE FIFTEEN CHAPTERS HOLD NUMEROUS MEETINGS ON TECHNICAL SUBJECTS, FOREST POLICY, AND DEVELOPING TRENDS IN FORESTRY. ITS NEWSLETTER, THE WESTERN FORESTER, IS DISTRIBUTED FOUR TIMES A YEAR TO ALL OSAF MEMBERS THROUGHOUT OREGON. IN 2021, ZOOM TECHNICAL MEETINGS WERE HELD AND FIELD TRIPS WERE ALSO CONDUCTED BY VIDEO. THE 2021 OREGON SAF ANNUAL MEETING HAD A THEME OF ?LANDSCAPE RESTORATION: PERSPECTIVES, PARTNERSHIPS, OPPORTUNITIES.? THIS WAS THE SECOND EVER VIRTUAL MEETING WITH VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS THAT OSAF HAS HELD. IT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL WITH 120 MEMBERS ATTENDING. TECHNICAL INFORMATION AND EXPERT OPINION IN SUPPORT OF GOOD FOREST MANAGEMENT POLICY WAS PROVIDED IN LETTERS. THESE INCLUDED COMMENTS ON ARCHIE CREEK FIRE SALVAGE PLAN EA, COMMENTS ON THE ODF SANTIAM STATE FOREST FIRE SALVAGE PLAN TO THE ODF, WRITTEN COMMENTS ON SB S-192, WRITTEN LETTERS OF SUPPORT FOR US HOUSE BILLS: HR-2562, SOLVING OUR SHORTAGES FOR SEEDLINGS ACT, HR-2621, FORESTRY EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ACT, AND HR-7843 REPLANT ACT. WRITTEN COMMENTS WERE ALSO MADE TO THE GOVERNOR?S COUNCIL ON WILDFIRE RESPONSE TEAM RECOMMENDATIONS- MOST OF WHICH WERE ADOPTED IN OREGON SB 762. WRITTEN COMMENTS WERE ALSO SUBMITTED IN OPPOSITION TO OREGON HB-2357, DEFUNDING THE OREGON FOREST RESOURCE INSTITUTE. A STATE-WIDE NEWSLETTER IS PUBLISHED ELECTRONICALLY TO KEEP ALL MEMBERS CURRENT WITH STATE-WIDE ISSUES.
