WE STARTED THE YEAR WITH COVID VERY MUCH PRESENT IN OUR COMMUNITY AND IN OUR MINDS. WE BARGAINED WITH THE DISTRICT TO DETERMINE COVID LEAVE PROTOCOLS AND HOW TO HANDLE THE VACCINE MANDATE. THIS WAS AN ENTIRELY UNPRECEDENTED SITUATION. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE BUT WE MANAGED TO HAVE A SCHOOL YEAR THAT WAS IN-PERSON FOR THOSE FAMILIES WHO CHOSE THAT FOR THEIR STUDENTS AND VIRTUAL FOR THOSE FAMILIES WHO PREFERRED THAT ENVIRONMENT.WORKLOAD ISSUES WERE A SIGNIFICANT TOPIC OF CONCERN, ESPECIALLY IN TERMS OF A LACK OF EDUCATOR DIRECTED TIME. WE WERE SUCCESSFUL IN NEGOTIATING WITH THE DISTRICT AND REACHED AGREEMENT TO ALLOW LATE ARRIVAL DAYS TO BE USED FOR TEACHER PLANNING.ADDITIONALLY, WE BARGAINED ON BEHALF OF OUR MEMBERS AND ACHIEVED A RETENTION BONUS OF $2250, A BUYOUT OF UNUSED PERSONAL LEAVE OF UP TO $500, AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL 1.5% ADDED TO THE 3% COLA WE HAD ALREADY AGREED ON FOR THIS YEAR.WE PREVAILED IN AN UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE AGAINST THE DISTRICT AND OUR MEMBERS WERE AWARDED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN BACK PAY ALONG WITH 9% INTEREST. WE ALSO SUCCESSFULLY ENDED THE DISTRICT PRACTICE OF ASSIGNING TWO DIFFERENT CLASSES TO A TEACHER IN THE SAME CLASS PERIOD FOR OUR SECONDARY EDGE (ONLINE) TEACHERS.WE ARE EXCITED TO SEE A STEADY INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP AS WELL AS CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION WITH ALL MEMBERS VIA OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER. ALL IN ALL, A BANNER YEAR!
