THE SALEM KEIZER EDUCATION ASSOCIATION HAS WORKED TO INCREASE MEMBERSHIP SINCE WE RETURNED TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION. DURING THE PANDEMIC, MEMBERSHIP HAD DROPPED BECAUSE WE WERE UNABLE TO MEET WITH NEW HIRES. SKEA NOW PARTICIPATES IN WEEKLY NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION SESSIONS AND MAKE USE OF THE TIME PROVIDED TO INTRODUCE NEW STAFF TO OUR UNION AND THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP. WE HAVE SEEN MEMBERSHIP INCREASE OVER TIME TO HOVER AT OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE 87%. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE MORE THAN 90% MEMBERSHIP.SKEA HAS BEEN PREPARING FOR BARGAINING STARTING IN THE SPRING OF 2022. WE ORGANIZED COMMUNITY INFORMATION SESSIONS AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND DEVELOPED A BARGAINING PLAN SUPPORTED BY SCHOOL BUILDING AND WORK SITE BRATS (BARGAINING REPRESENTATIVE ADVOCATE TEAM). THESE INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN CRITICAL IN COMMUNICATING WITH MEMBERSHIP ABOUT VARIOUS CONTRACT AND BARGAINING INFORMATION. ADDITIONALLY, OUR COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE COMPLETED A MAJOR OVERHAUL OF OUR WEBSITE TO MAKE IT MORE USEFUL AS A RESOURCE TO OUR MEMBERS. WE HAVE ALSO USED THIS AS A MEANS TO COMMUNICATE THE MOST RECENT PROPOSALS IN BARGAINING.SKEA HAS BEEN BARGAINING WITH THE DISTRICT SINCE APRIL 2023. WE ARE CURRENTLY IN MEDIATION AND ARE MOVING CLOSER TO REACHING AGREEMENT. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS, WE ARE HOPING FOR SETTLEMENT BUT ALSO PREPARING FOR A POSSIBLE STRIKE. THE MAJORITY OF OUR EFFORTS IN THE PREVIOUS 10 MONTHS HAVE BEEN DIRECTED TO THE BARGAINING PROCESS.
