COMMUNITY PROJECTS - TO PROMOTE VOLUNTEERISM AND IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY THROUGH EFFECTIVE ACTION. THERE ARE 250 TRAINED VOLUNTEERS.
THE JLR YOUNG WOMEN'S SUMMIT IS A 4 DAY-LONG WORKSHOP/FORUM FOR YOUNG WOMEN AGES 11-16 YEARS OLD LED BY A PROFESSIONAL FACILITATOR AND SUPPORTED BY THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF READING, PA, INC. (JLR) AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS. THE PURPOSE OF THE SUMMIT IS TO ENGAGE A DIVERSE GROUP OF YOUNG WOMEN FROM READING AND BERKS COUNTY IN A MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE THAT WILL 1) EXPAND THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS, 2) CULTIVATE THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS, AND 3) EMPOWER THEM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND THE CREATION OF A COMMUNITY PROJECT. THE SUMMIT WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF THE JLR'S NEW MULTI-YEAR INITIATIVE HEALTHY CHOICES, HEALTHY KIDS, FOCUSED ON PROMOTING HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS, AND HEALTH SELF ESTEEM IN OUR YOUTH.
COMMUNITY GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT EMPOWER THE LOCAL BERKS COUNTY COMMUNITY. THE SUSTAINER MEMBERSHIP OF THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF READING AWARDED COMMUNITY GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ALIGN WITH THEIR MISSION. GRANTS WERE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS:(1) BERKS YOUTH CHORUS, A CHORAL AND MUSIC EDUCATION ORGANIZATION WITH STRONG FOCUS ON COMMUNITY, FRIENDSHIP, AND MUSIC PERFORMANCE.(2) BERKS CONNECTION/PRETRIAL SERVICES - VOLUNTEERS RECORD INCARCERATED PARENTS READING STORIES TO THEIR YOUNG CHILDREN. THE BOOK AND DVD ARE SENT TO THE CHILD FOR THEM TO WATCH THEIR PARENT READING WHILE FOLLOWING ALONG IN THE BOOK. THIS PROVIDES A SENSE OF CLOSENESS BETWEEN THE PARENT AND CHILD THAT WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE POSSIBLE WHILE FOSTERING A LOVE OF READING.(3) OPPORTUNITY HOUSE FOR SUMMER CAMP FIELD TRIP COSTS(4) VOICEUP BERKS EMPOWERS THE LOCAL YOUTH COMMUNITY TO GET INVOLVED IN VOLUNTEERING. THE GRANT WAS USED TO FUND THE STAR VIDEO PRODUCTION COSTS.
