THE PRIMARY MISSION OF HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER, INC. IS TO PROTECT, PRESERVE AND RESTORE THE HACKENSACK RIVER WATERSHED AND ITS LIVING RESOURCES.HACKENSACKRIVERKEEPER FIGHTS FOR CLEAN WATER, OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION AND PUBLICACCESS TO THE RIVER FOR BOTH ACTIVE AND PASSIVE RECREATION. ITACCOMPLISHES ITS MISSION BY PROSECUTING POLLUTERS, PARTICIPATING IN THEADMINISTRATION OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL OPEN SPACE TRUST FUNDS, ENGAGINGTHE PUBLIC THROUGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS, AND ORGANIZINGA VARIETY OF ECO-PROGRANS, INCLUDING CLEANUPS, PONTOON BOAT CRUISES,BIRDING WALKS, CANOE AND KAYAK RENTALS IN THE MEADOWLANDS, OVER COUNTYPARK, AND VARIOUS EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE WATER SHED.

PADDLINGHACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER OPERATES TWO PADDLE CENTERS ON THE HACKENSACK RIVER. RIVERKEEPER PARTNERS WITH BERGEN COUNTY PARKS AND HUDSON COUNTY PARKS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE WATERSHED. IN ADDITION, PROGRAMS ARE COORDINATED WITH VARIOUS URBAN CITIES, SUCH AS NEWARK AND BAYONNE. THE PROGRAMS ENABLE THE LOCAL RESIDENTS TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE RIVER. HACKENSACK RIVER INCLUDES AN EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT RELATING TO THE HABITAT, WILDLIFE, POLLUTION AND RECOVERY OF THE ESTUARY WITH ALL THE PROGRAMS. MULTIPLE ECO-TRIPS AND HABITAT EXCURSION ARE SCHEDULED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. 8000 INDIVIDUALS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM LAST YEAR.
ECO- CRUISES:HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER TAKES OVER 2,513 ADULTS AND CHILDREN OUT ON THERIVER EVERY YEAR ON OUR ECO-CRUISES, OUR PRIMARY OUTREACH PROGRAM. FOR2 1/2 HOURS, PASSENGERS ARE TREATED TO A DIFFERENT VIEW OF OUR AREAALONG WITH A NARRATION THAT DESCRIBES THE WILDLIFE, POLLUTION, POLITICSAND RECOVERY OF THE RIVER AND MEADOWLANDS ESTUARY.
CLEANUPSHACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER HAS AN AMBITIOUS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CORPORATE PARTNER WATERSHED CLEAN-UP PROGRAM. OVER 28,000LBS WERE REMOVED LAST YEAR THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF VOLUNTEERS AND CORPORATE PARTNERS. PLASTICS, TIRES, APPLIANCES AND PAPER DEBRIS COMPRISED OF THE BULK OF THE DEBRIS. THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION OF THE SOURCE OF THE POLLUTION HAS BEEN AN ONGOING GOAL OF THE PROGRAM.
