IS TO PROTECT, PRESERVE, AND RESTORE THE HACKENSACK RIVER WATERSHED AND ITS LIVING RESOURCES.HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER FIGHTS FOR CLEAN WATER, OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION, AND PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE RIVER FOR BOTH ACTIVE AND PASSIVE RECREATION. IT ACCOMPLISHES ITS MISSION BY PROSECUTING POLLUTERS, PARTICIPATING IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL OPEN SPACE TRUST FUNDS, ENGAGING THE PUBLIC THROUGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS, AND ORGANIZING A VARIETY OF ECO-PROGRAMS, INCLUDING CLEANUPS, PONTOON BOAT CRUISES, BIRDING WALKS, CANOE AND KAYAK RENTALS IN THE MEADOWLANDS, OVERPECK COUNTY PARK, AND VARIOUS EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE WATERSHED.

ECO- CRUISES:HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER HOSTED 1726 ADULTS, STUDENTS AND CHILDREN ON OUR ECO-CRUISES. THE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH DURING THE 2.5 HOUR TOUR INCLUDES A NARRATIVE THAT DESCRIBES THE ECO-SYSTEM, POLLUTION, WILDLIFE AND RECOVERYT OF THE RIVER AND THE MEADOWLANDS.
CLEANUPS:HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER HAS AN AMBITIOUS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WATERSHED CLEAN-UP PROGRAM. OLVER 18,598 LBS OF DEBRIS WERE REMOVED LAST YEAR THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF VOLUNTEERS AND CORPORATE PARTNERS. PLASTICS, TIRES, APPLIANCES AND PAPER DEBRIS COMPRISED THE BULF OF THE ITEMS FOUND. THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION ABOUT THE SOURCE OF THE POLLUTION HAS BEEN AN ONGOING GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
PADDLING:HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER OPERATES THREE PADDLE CENTERS ON THE HACKENSACK RIVER.RIVERKEEPER PARTNERS WITH BERGEN COUNTY PARKS AND HUDSON COUNTY PARKS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE WATWERSHED. IN ADDITION, PROGRAMS ARE COORDINATED WITH VARIOUS URBAN CITIES, COMMUNITIES AND GROUPS. DURING 2023, 4976 INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM
