TRAILSADK'S THREE TRAILS PROGRAMS: SUPERVISED VOLUNTEERS, BACKCOUNTRY STEWARDSHIP, AND THE PROFESSIONAL TRAILS PROGRAM ADVOCATE FOR THE STEWARDSHIP, PROTECTION, AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF NEW YORK STATE'S WILD LANDS AND WATERWAYS. THE SUPERVISED VOLUNTEER TRAILS PROGRAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE DEC SINCE 1986 TO MAINTAIN HIKING TRAILS AND BACKCOUNTRY FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL PARKS. THIS YEAR BACKCOUNTRY STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE LEAN-TO ADOPTER PROGRAM ALLOW A GROUP OF ALMOST 260 VOLUNTEERS TO MAINTAIN "THEIR" LEAN-TO IN THE ADIRONDACKS, INCLUDING THE GENERAL CLEANLINESS, MAINTAINING A GUEST LOG BOOK, AND SUBMITTING YEARLY REPORTS TO THE DEC. THE ADK PROFESSIONAL TRAILS PROGRAM (PRO CREW) FOCUSES ON RESOURCE PROTECTION THROUGH QUALITY TRAIL WORK, LAYOUT, AND DESIGN. THE CREW HAS GROWN FROM ONE PERSON IN 1978 TO SIXTEEN IN 2021. THE PRO CREW MAINTAINS, BUILDS, AND RECONSTRUCTS TRAILS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK STATE WITH A FOCUS ON THE ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL FOREST PRESERVES.ADK HAS THREE COMPLIMENTARY TRAILS PROGRAMS: SUPERVISED VOLUNTEERS, BACKCOUNTRY STEWARDSHIP, AND THE PROFESSIONAL TRAILS PROGRAM. VOLUNTEERS MAINTAINED 199 LEAN-TOS, CLEARED DRAINAGE AND REMOVED BLOWDOWN FROM 152 MILES OF TRAILS. OUR PRO CREWS BUILT 687 SQ FEET OF ROCK TURNPICKING, 4 30-FOOT LONG DIMENSIONAL SPAN BRIDGES, 3 10-FOOT-LONG DIMENSIONAL LADDERS, 80 FEET OF BOG BRIDGING, 115 ROCK STAIRS, .5 MILE OF NEW TRAIL. VOLUNTEER TRAIL CREWS CONSTRUCTED 100 FEET OF BOG BRIDING, 10 STEP STONES, RE-DECKED A 50 FOOT SUSPENSION BRIDGE, AND CLEARED 2.5 MILES OF TRAIL.THESE PROGRAMS ADVOCATE FOR THE STEWARDSHIP, PROTECTION, AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF NEW YORK STATE'S WILD LANDS AND WATERWAYS. THE SUPERVISED VOLUNTEER TRAILS PROGRAM HAS WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE DEC SINCE 1986 TO HELP MAINTAIN HIKING TRAILS AND BACKCOUNTRY FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL PARKS. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE SKILL WORKSHOPS SUCH AS BASIC TRAIL MAINTENANCE, SPECIAL EVENTS LIKE NATIONAL TRAILS DAY AND FALL TRAILS DAY, HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND JOHNS BROOK VALLEY TRAIL WORK WEEKEND. BACKCOUNTRY STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE LEAN-TO ADOPTER PROGRAM ALLOW A GROUP OF ALMOST 260 VOLUNTEERS TO MAINTAIN "THEIR" LEAN-TO AND ADOPTED SECTION OF TRAIL, INCLUDING THE GENERAL CLEANLINESS OF THE STRUCTURE AND ADJACENT PIT PRIVY, MAINTAINING A GUEST LOG BOOK, AND SUBMITTING YEARLY REPORTS TO THE DEC. THE ADK PROFESSIONAL TRAILS PROGRAM (PRO CREW) IS BASED ON RESOURCE PROTECTION THROUGH QUALITY TRAIL WORK, TRAIL LAYOUT, AND DESIGN. INITIALLY, THE FOCUS WAS ON THE DAMAGED TRAILS OF THE HIGH PEAKS REGION OF THE ADIRONDACK PARK. NOW WITH A MUCH BROADER SCOPE, THE PRO CREW MAINTAINS, BUILDS, AND RECONSTRUCTS TRAILS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK STATE WITH A FOCUS ON THE ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL FOREST PRESERVES.
RECREATIONSTAY, PLAY, PROTECT, AND EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS. ADK PROVIDES UNIQUE LODGING FACILITIES TO HELP VISITORS LAUNCH THEIR ADVENTURES. ADK OFFERED OVER 2,000 OUTINGS AND ACTIVITIES LAST YEAR THROUGHOUT NEW YORK. OUTINGS INCLUDE HIKING, PADDLING, CYCLING, SKIING, SNOWSHOEING, EARN-A-PATCH CHALLENGES, AND MUCH MORE. IN 2021 ADK ADVOCATED FOR INCREASED FUNDING IN THE NYS BUDGET SPECIFICALLY FOR STEWARDSHIP IN THE ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL FOREST PRESERVE PARKS, INCLUDING EDUCATION, TRAIL BUILDING, INCLUSIVITY, PARKING, AND SANITATION. ADK PARTICIPATED AS A MEMBER OF A GOVERNOR APPOINTED STRATEGIC PLANNING GROUP IN THE CATSKILLS TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO LAND MANAGEMENT AGENCIES ON INCREASED VISITOR USE IN THE CATSKILL PARK, AND FACILITATED A FORMAL ASSESSMENT IN THE CATSKILL PARK OF POPULAR RECREATIONAL SITES BY THE LEAVE NO TRACE CENTER FOR OUTDOOR ETHICS. ADK SUPPORTED EFFORTS TO PROTECT THE BLUE STONE WILD FOREST IN THE CATSKILLS FROM PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT.
