Part 3 - Line 4a
SINCE OPENING IN 1983, THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE HAS SERVED AS A HOME- AWAY-FROM-HOME PROVIDING SHELTER AS WELL AS AN INFORMAL SUPPORT NETWORK TO OVER 29,000 FAMILIES OF CRITICALLY ILL AND INJURED CHILDREN PRIMARILY FROM THE NINE SOUTHERN COUNTIES OF NEW JERSEY. THE FAMILY MEALS PROGRAM PROVIDES THE WARMTH OF A HOME-COOKED MEAL AND CAMARADERIE OF FRIENDS AT WHAT IS PROBABLY THE MOST EMOTIONALLY AND FINANCIALLY STRESSFUL TIME OF THEIR LIVES. IN MARCH 1999, A NEW, LARGER, FULLY ACCESSIBLE RONALD HOUSE WAS COMPLETED TO REPLACE A HIGH-MAINTENANCE, CENTURY-OLD, LEASED FACILITY. THIS AMBITIOUS PROJECT HAS ALLOWED THE ORGANIZATION TO BETTER CONTINUE ITS MISSION OF SUPPORTING FAMILIES OF ILL CHILDREN INTO THE NEW CENTURY. THE HOUSE SERVES CHILDREN BEING TREATED AT COOPER UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN-PHILADELPHIA, WILLS EYE HOSPITAL, AND CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA WHO STAY ANYWHERE FROM ONE NIGHT TO SEVERAL MONTHS. A CORE GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS HELP SUPPORT THE STAFF AND GUESTS OF THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE BY PROVIDING OFFICE ASSISTANCE, LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING, MEAL PREPARATION FOR THE FAMILIES AND ASSISTANCE AT SPECIAL EVENTS. MANY IN KIND DONATIONS OF GOODS AND SERVICES REDUCE THE EXPENSES THAT THE CHARITY WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE TO PAY. SIGNIFICANT IN KIND DONATIONS INCLUDE TRANSPORTATION SERVICES, EXTERMINATION, SODA, BEVERAGES, PAPER PRODUCTS,CLEANING SUPPLIES, FOOD PRODUCTS, MARKETING, LEGAL AND ACCOUNTING SERVICES.
