EXHIBITIONS, COLLECTIONS, AND THEATER: IN FY2023 THE MUSEUM HOSTED 5 MAJOR ART EXHIBITIONS ON SUBJECTS RANGING FROM MENTORSHIP IN THE REGION'S BLACK ART-MAKING COMMUNITY (WITH PARTNER ART IN THE ATRIUM) TO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ROCK-AND-ROLL CHRONICLES OF JAY BLAKESBURG, AUGMENTED BY 18 SMALLER PROJECTS FEATURING STANDOUT OBJECTS FROM ITS 45,000+ COLLECTION AND BORROWED WORKS OF ART. COLLECTION-BASED INSTALLATIONS OF GLOBAL MATERIAL CULTURAL PROPERTY OCCUPY SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE 1913, MCKIM, MEAD & WHITE-DESIGNED TWIN OAKS MANSION AND THE MODERN FACILITIES, AMONG THEM THE WORLD-RENOWNED MURTAUGH GUINNESS COLLECTION OF MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND AUTOMATA. THE 312-SEAT BICKFORD THEATER AND OUTSIDE FACILITIES HOSTED AUDIENCES FOR 23 LIVE MUSIC AND DANCE EVENTS AND 7 FILMS.
PUBLIC EDUCATION: A LAYERED APPROACH TO HOSTING ORGANIZED PRE-K-12 GROUPS THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH OVER 50 SCHOOLS BROUGHT OVER 3,000 STUDENTS TO THE MUSEUM FOR TOURS AND ART-MAKING ACTIVITIES AND IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING. ADDITIONALLY, THE MUSEUM CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-DIRECTED AND FACILITATED LEARNING EXPERIENCES THROUGH FESTIVAL EVENTS (ON-SITE AND REGIONALLY), FAMILY DAYS, AND THE SMITHSONIAN SPARK!LAB FOR HANDS-ON LEARNING ON STEM AND STEAM PRINCIPLES THROUGH CREATIVE PLAY.
