Part 3 - Line 4a

ENDING TORTURE IN U.S. PRISONS - NRCAT ENGAGES IN EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY TO END THE TORTURE OF SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IN U.S. PRISONS, JAILS, AND DETENTION CENTERS. IN THIS, NRCAT WORKS TO SHIFT THE PRACTICES OF OUR U.S. CARCERAL SYSTEM AWAY FROM PUNISHMENT AND TOWARD RESTORATION AND HEALING. THIS INCLUDES EDUCATION FOR GOVERNMENTS AT ALL LEVELS TO FOLLOW THE NELSON MANDELA RULES, THE UNITED NATIONS STANDARD MINIMUM RULES FOR THE TREATMENT OF PRISONERS. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THOSE HELD IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IN THE U.S. ARE IN STATE PRISONS AND LOCAL JAILS, AND NRCAT SUPPORTS STATE-LEVEL CAMPAIGNS IN MORE THAN TWENTY STATES.

HUMAN RIGHT AND NATIONAL SECURITY PROGRAM - FROM ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN 2006, NRCAT PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN WORKING TO STOP THE POST-9/11 TORTURE OF DETAINEES BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, AND SUBSEQUENT EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY TO ENSURE THAT THE COUNTRY WILL NEVER ENGAGE IN THE TORTURE OF DETAINEES DURING INTERROGATIONS AGAIN. NRCAT'S WORK IN THIS PROGRAM AREA INCLUDES CONFRONTING ISLAMOPHOBIA, TOWARDS ONE OF ITS ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS OF ENDING THE BIGOTRY AND HATRED THAT PROMOTES THE PRACTICE AND ACCEPTANCE OF TORTURE AGAINST RELIGIOUSLY, ETHNICALLY, AND OTHER TARGETED GROUPS. IT ALSO INCLUDES PUSHING FOR AN END TO INDEFINITE DETENTION OF THE MEN HELD AT THE DETENTION CENTER AT GUANTANAMO BAY, ALONG WITH CALLING FOR A CLOSURE TO THE DETENTION CENTER.

LOBBYING - NRCAT ENGAGES IN GRASSROOTS AND DIRECT LOBBYING IN THE PREVENTION OF TORTURE AND SOLITARY CONFINEMENT.
