Part 3 - Line 4a

GIRLS EDUCATION IN THE FORM OF AN ALL GIRLS SCHOOL (ALOK GIRLS' ACADEMY) IS THE VAD FOUNDATION'S LARGEST PROGRAM. IN 2021, 800 GIRLS ENROLLED AT AGA, MAKING IT THE FOUNDATION'S LARGEST ACADEMIC YEAR IN ITS HISTORY. STUDENTS ATTEND CLASSES FEBRUARY THROUGH DECEMBER (SOUTH SUDAN ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR) WHERE OUR STAFF OF TEACHERS CONDUCT LESSONS IN ENGLISH, SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, WRITING, HISTORY, AND GEOGRAPHY. STUDENTS ALSO PARTICIPATE IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SOCCER AND VOLLEYBALL, DRAMA CLUB, AND DEBATE TEAM. OUR TRADITIONAL EDUCATION/SCHOOLING PROGRAM IS OUR PRIMARY FOCUS.

IN 2021, THE SECOND LARGEST PROGRAM WAS OUR MEDIA PROGRAM THAT WAS SUPPORTED BY A GRANT THE FOUNDATION RECEIVED FROM INTERNEWS (USAID). THROUGH THIS GRANT, THE FOUNDATION IMPLEMENTED A MEDIA TRAINING PROGRAM TO SUPPORT LOCAL MEDIA FOR DISPLACED COMMUNITIES AND REFUGEES IN SOUTH SUDAN. THROUGH THE GRANT AND THE PROGRAM, WE TRAINED 415 STUDENTS IN MEDIA AND DRAMA IN PERFORMANCE-BASED EDUCATION. MEDIA AND PLAYS THAT WERE PRODUCED FOCUSED ON EDUCATION ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE, HEALTH AND HYGIENE, PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY. MANY COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTEND THE PLAYS THAT WERE PUT ON THROUGHOUT THE REGION. 45 STUDENTS FROM THE LARGER GROUP RECEIVED ADDITIONAL TRAINING IN CAMERAWORK, VIDEO EDITING, SCRIPTING, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT. OVER 2500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN HELPED THROUGH THE SERVICES OF MEDIA AND STORY-TELLING.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE THE THIRD LARGEST PROGRAM THAT THE FOUNDATION HAS. THROUGH THESE PROGRAMS, WE TRAIN COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN MASONRY, CARPENTRY, SEWING, FARMING, AQUACULTURE, AND BEE-KEEPING. THESE STUDENTS AND ADULTS ARE THEN ABLE TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND MAKE A LIVING TO HELP SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE TRAINED OVER 200 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THESE PROGRAMS.

THE ABOVE PROGRAMS ARE THE MAIN FOCUSES OF THE FOUNDATION; HOWEVER, WE DO OFFER HEALTH AND HYGIENE CLINICS AND TRAINING, WHICH STARTED AS A RESULT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
