ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION PREPARATION: AS THE FIRST AND ONLY HUMANE SOCIETY IN COUNCIL BLUFFS AND POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, WE PROVIDE SHELTER, FOOD, VACCINATIONS, MEDICAL CARE, AND BEHAVIOR OBSERVATIONS TO THOUSANDS OF STRAY, UNWANTED, OR ABANDONED ANIMALS EACH YEAR. PART OF THE ADOPTION PREPARATION IS TO MAKE SURE ALL ANIMALS BEING ADOPTED ARE SPAYED AND NEUTERED, MICROCHIPPED, DEWORMED, VACCINATED, AND HAD ANY MEDICAL NEEDS ADDRESSED. WE PROVIDE DIFFERENT PATHWAYS FOR ANIMALS TO GET THEIR SECOND CHANCES THROUGH FOSTER CARE PROGRAMS, RESCUE PARTNERSHIPS, TRAINING PARTNERSHIPS, AND ADOPTION. THIS EXTENSIVE LEVEL OF CARE CULMINATES WITH SUCCESSFUL PLACEMENT FOR THE ANIMALS NEEDS. MHS ADOPTION COUNSELORS ARE TRAINED TO LISTEN TO AND IN RETURN, ASK POIGNANT QUESTIONS TO HELP MATCH ANIMAL INTO THEIR FOREVER FAMILIES AND ANSWER QUESTIONS POST ADOPTION.
VOLUNTEERISM, PUBLIC EDUCATION, AND YOUTH PROGRAMS: AS A HUMANE SOCIETY, WE FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON COMPANION ANIMALS AND OWNERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ALLOW FOR CONNECTIONS TO ANIMALS THROUGH OUR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES. THROUGH WEEKLY ARTICLES AND DAILY SOCIAL MEDIA POST WE CAN EDUCATE AND ENGAGE THE PUBLIC ON ANIMAL CARE, ADOPTABLE ANIMALS, AND HEARTWARMING STORIES OF THE HUMAN/ANIMAL BOND. WE HAVE CREATED WAYS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO IMPACT OUR MISSION BY ASSISTING IN OFF-SITE EVENTS, ANIMALS CARE AND ENRICHMENT, DAILY CLEANING, FOSTERING, AND MANY OTHER AREAS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEERS TO GET INVOLVED. WE OFTEN GET REQUEST TO TOUR OUR FACILITY AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE ARE ALWAYS EXCITED TO ENGAGE OUR YOUNGER COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN WHAT MHS REPRESENTS AND HOW THEY CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ANIMAL WELFARE.
