INDONESIA: SINCE 2007, HEALTH IN HARMONY HAS COLLABORATED WITH ASRI, AN INDONESIAN AFFILIATE ORGANIZATION, AND COMMUNITIES AROUND GUNUNG PALUNG NATIONAL PARK, TO CREATE AND IMPLEMENT COMMUNITY-DESIGNED PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT HUMAN HEALTH, ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOODS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION. IN 2023, HIH, ASRI AND THE INDONESIAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH BEGAN WORKING TOGETHER TO DESIGN A WAY TO SCALE THE HIH AND ASRI MODEL OF INVESTMENT IN COMMUNITY-DESIGNED SOLUTIONS ACROSS INDONESIA.
MADAGASCAR: IN FALL 2019, HIH BEGAN WORKING ALONGSIDE COMMUNITIES AROUND MANOMBO RAINFOREST TO REALIZE THEIR SOLUTIONS TO PROTECT AND RESTORE THE RAINFOREST INCLUDING, PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS FOOD SECURITY, ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOODS, REFORESTATION, AND EDUCATION. THIS PROTECTED AREA IN SOUTHEAST MADAGASCAR IS HOME TO NINE ENDANGERED LEMUR SPECIES, AS WELL AS OTHER THREATENED SPECIES. IN 2023, HIH SIGNED A PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH MDECINS SANS FRONTIRES/ DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS AND MALAGASY NGO NY TANINTSIKA TO BEGIN AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PILOT PROJECT IN IKONGO, MADAGASCAR. THIS NEW PARTNERSHIP WILL COMBINE HIHS RADICAL LISTENING AND PLANETARY HEALTH APPROACH WITH MSFS MEDICAL EXPERTISE AND NTS LOCAL SYSTEMS AND PRACTICE KNOWLEDGE TO PROTECT AND EXPAND MADAGASCARS AMBOSITRA-VONDROZO FOREST CORRIDOR AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE.
SCALING: BY 2030, HIH PLANS TO ASSIST COMMUNITIES TO HAVE AN OUTSIZED IMPACT ON PROTECTING 900 MILLION HECTARES OF TROPICAL RAINFORESTS THROUGH ADVOCACY, STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, AND RAINFOREST EXCHANGE, A TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM THAT UPENDS THE STATUS QUO BY DIRECTLY INVESTING IN IP & LC SOLUTIONS AND REMOVING BURDENSOME REPORTING REQUIREMENTS. RAINFOREST EXCHANGE IS THE FIRST PLATFORM TO CENTER COMMUNITY-DESIGNED SOLUTIONS, USER ACTION, AND IMPACT MEASUREMENT (CARBON, BIODIVERSITY, AND COMMUNITY THRIVING) IN ONE PLACE SO DONORS AND COMMUNITIES ARE ABLE TO SEE THE IMPACT CLEARLY. AT SCALE, 90% OF THE FUNDING WILL GO DIRECTLY INTO COMMUNITY-DESIGNED SOLUTIONS TO PROTECT AND RESTORE TROPICAL RAINFORESTS.
