Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
FOR SEVERAL YEARS, THE HUMMINGBIRD MONITORING NETWORK (HMN) FOCUSED ITS EFFORTS ON MONITORING AND STUDYING HUMMINGBIRD POPULATIONS TO OBTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT SUPPORTS THE CONSERVATION OF THESE MAGNIFICENT CREATURES. HUMMINGBIRD CONSERVATION NETWORKS (HCNS) RESULTS FROM INTEGRATING COMMUNITY-BASED CONSERVATION IDEAS INTO HMN'S SCIENCE-BASED BEGINNING. HCNS' MISSION, VIRTUALLY UNCHANGED FROM HMN'S ORIGINAL MISSION, IS TO HELP HUMMINGBIRDS SURVIVE, REPRODUCE, AND THRIVE WHILE ENGAGING HUMAN COMMUNITIES TO DEMONSTRATE HOW THEY CAN BENEFIT ECONOMICALLY, SOCIALLY, AND ECOLOGICALLY THROUGH THEIR HUMMINGBIRD CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES. MAINTAINING HUMMINGBIRD DIVERSITY AND ABUNDANCE THROUGHOUT THE AMERICAS IS STILL A PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE ORGANIZATION. 2020 ACTIVITIES INCLUDED HMN'S COORDINATED TREND MONITORING AT SITES ACROSS THE WESTERN US AND CANADA, INCREASING RESTORATION CAPACITY IN MEXICO, AND DEVELOPING HCNS PROGRAMS. PLEASE VISIT WWW.SAVEHUMMINGBIRDS.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3
EDUCATION/OUTREACH: DURING THESE PANDEMIC TIMES, EDUCATION ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON ONLINE OUTREACH, INCLUDING REDESIGNING THE WEBSITE AND IMPLEMENTING ADDITIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES. OTHER ACTIVITIES LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR BEGINNING HUMMINGBIRD CONSERVATION COMMUNITIES AND RESERVES. THIS PROGRAM WILL START WHEN SOCIAL RESTRICTIONS ALLOW.
RESTORATION/RESEARCH: GIVEN THE RESTRICTIONS CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC, RESTORATION AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON DEFINING PRIMARY PROGRAMS FOR EACH SECTION. THE FOCUS OF THE RESTORATION ACTIVITIES WAS TO DEFINE THE PROGRAMS NEEDED TO RESTORE THE NECTAR LANDSCAPE AND HABITATS FOR HUMMINGBIRDS. THE FOCUS OF THE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES WAS TO COMPLETE SCIENCE PAPERS AND IDENTIFY KEY NEXT RESEARCH AREAS.
MONITORING: TEAMS OF BIOLOGISTS AND VOLUNTEERS MONITORED HUMMINGBIRD POPULATIONS AT BRITISH COLUMBIA, MONTANA, IDAHO, UTAH, COLORADO, NEW MEXICO, AND ARIZONA SITES. TEAM MEMBERS WORKING AT EACH SITE INCURRED MONITORING EXPENSES, BUT HMN PAYS FOR COORDINATION SERVICES AND TRAVEL EXPENSES. SPECIALIZED TOOLS NEEDED TO CONDUCT THIS MONITORING AND OTHER RESEARCH ACTIVITIES CONTINUE TO BE MADE AND SOLD TO PERMITTED HUMMINGBIRD BANDERS. THIS ACTIVITY PROVIDES REVENUE FOR THE PROGRAM.
