Part 3 - Line 4a

SENIOR SERVICES FUNDED BY THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT FOR THE AGING (DFTA):THE CANAAN SENIOR SERVICE CENTER CELEBRATED 50 YEARS THIS YEAR! THIS CONGREGATE PROGRAM HAS BEEN REINVENTING ITSELF- AS MANY OTHER SENIOR PROGRAMS- TO ATTRACT AND ASSIST THE ELDER COMMUNITY. WE OFFER HYBRID PROGRAMMING- IN-PERSON AND ONLINE.SINCE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS WERE RELAXED, WEVE WORKED HARD AT OUTREACH TO LET THE OLDER ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY KNOW WE ARE BACK AND THAT OUR CENTER IS SAFE. CURRENTLY WEVE BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN AN AVERAGE OF 16-20 OLDER ADULTS PER DAY.THIS YEAR WE MADE DELIBERATE EFFORTS TO MAKE SURE THE POLITICIANS THAT REPRESENT THE AREAS, THE CANAAN SENIOR SERVICE CENTER IS LOCATED IN, WERE AWARE OF US AND ALL THE PROGRAM HAD TO OFFER. ADDITIONALLY, THE STAFF JOINED SEVERAL COMMITTEES THAT INVOLVED SENIOR ADVOCACY AND IT ALLOWED THE PROGRAM TO BE IN THE FOREFRONT ON SENIOR ISSUES.THE CENTER CONTINUES TO OPERATE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 9AM-5PM. WE ALSO CONTINUE TO SERVE BREAKFAST & LUNCH. ALTHOUGH THE NUMBERS HAVE DECLINED SOMEWHAT, THE SENIORS STILL LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING A NUTRITIOUS MEAL EVERY DAY. THE PROGRAM STILL OFFERS TELEPHONE REASSURANCE, WHICH KEEPS OUR HOMEBOUND MEMBERS CONNECTED TO WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD. TECHNOLOGY HAS ALSO BECOME AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT CLASS OFFERED IN THE PROGRAM. SENIORS HAVE BEEN EXCITED TO LEARN HOW TO NAVIGATE SOCIAL MEDIA AND EMAILS. THERES ALSO EXERCISE CLASSES, TAI CHI, HEALTH MANAGEMENT, ARTS & CULTURE, EDUCATION AND RECREATION PROGRAMS.THIS YEAR WE ADDED NEW CLASSES IN SIGN LANGUAGE, PIANO & VOICE LESSONS, CHESS AND FALL PREVENTION.
