MECT CONSERVES LAND THROUGH ACQUISITIONS OF FEE INTEREST AND CONSERVATION EASEMENTS IN MANCHESTER AND ESSEX MASSACHUSETTS. IN 2021, WE HIRED A FULL-TIME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND REVIEWED MANY OF OUR PROGRAMS AND PROCEDURES. MECT HAS OVER 1,600 ACRES OF LAND UNDER PERMANENT PROTECTION. IN 2021, WE ACQUIRED TWO NEW PARCELS, ONE IN MANCHESTER AND ONE IN ESSEX, TOTALING APPROXIMATELY 33 ACRES. EDUCATIONAL HIKES RESUMED IN LATE SUMMER AND FALL, WITH NEW REGISTRATION PROCEDURES, ADAPTING TO THE PANDEMIC.
MECT HOSTED A WELL ATTENDED ON-LINE ANNUAL MEETING WITH KEYNOTE SPEAKER DR. ROBERT GEGEAR PROVIDING RESEARCH RESULTS ON POLLINATION SYSTEMS WITH A FOCUS ON NATIVE BEE AND PLANT SPECIES. MECT STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS COLLECTED FIELD DATA AND SUBMITTED TO THE STATE TO CERTIFY THREE VERNAL POOLS TO COLLECT CRITICAL WETLAND HABITAT. MECT CONTRACTED AN ORGANIZATION TO TRAP AND RELEASE SALAMANDERS TO IDENTIFY VIABILITY OF VERNAL POOL AND PRESENCE SPECIES. STAFF CONDUCTED FURTHER SALAMANDER RESEARCH WITH COVER TRAPS IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS. WITH TWO NEWSLETTERS, A MARKED INCREASE ON SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHLIGHTING NATURAL CONSERVATION INTERESTS, AND DEFENDING LAND, INCREASED OUR REACH SUBSTANTIALLY. MECT RESUMED EDUCATIONAL HIKES IN AUGUST 2021, OFFERING 5 HIKES AND A SCAVENGER HUNT.
