THE "FRIENDS" RAISES FUNDS FOR THE LIBRARY. THE DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES SUBMITS A REQUEST FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR WHICH IS APPROVED BY THE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND SUBMITTED TO THE FRIENDS. DURING THE YEAR THE CITY SUBMITS REQUESTS FOR REIMBURSEMENT FOR AMOUNTS PAID OUT BY THE CITY ON THE LIBRARY'S REQUEST AND THE FRIENDS REIMBURSE THE CITY, USUALLY QUARTERLY.
THE "FRIENDS" ACTS AS THE CUSTODIAN FOR THE SOMMER LIBRARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED BY A RETIRING MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY. THE PURPOSE OF THE FUND IS TO PROVIDE GRANTS TO THE SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY EMPLOYEES TO FUTHER THEIR EDUCATION IN LIBRARY SCIENCE. EMPLOYEES ARE CHOSEN BY THE GRANTS COMMITTEE COMPRISING OF A MEMBER OF SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES, A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE LIBRARY, AND A MEMBER OF THE "FRIENDS".
