THE FRIENDS OF THE SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY SUPPORTED THE LIBRARY SYSTEM'S SERVICES AND PROGRAMS THROUGH DONATIONS TO THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO'S MATCHING FUND PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES A 1:1 MATCH FOR DONATIONS UP TO $1 MILLION ANNUALLY, THUS DOUBLING THE IMPACT OF THE ORGANIZATION'S (FRIENDS') SUPPORT. THESE DONATIONS ENSURED THAT THE FULL $1 MILLION MATCHING AMOUNT WAS CAPTURED TO SUPPORT ELIGIBLE PURCHASES OF MATERIALS (BOOKS, MEDIA, ELECTRONIC RESOURCES, DATABASES, ETC.), LIBRARY PROGRAMS, EQUIPMENT, AND SUPPLIES, AND FURTHERMORE HELPED PROMOTE EQUITY AMONG THE 36 LIBRIARIES, AS HALF OF THE FUNDS DERIVED FROM THE CITY MATCH ARE REDISTRIBUTED AMONG THE BRANCH LIBRARIES HAVING THE FEWEST RESOURCES AND THUS GREATEST NEEDS.
THE FRIENDS OF THE SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY SUPPORTED THE LIBRARY SYSTEM'S SERVICES AND PROGRAMS THROUGH DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONS OF $22,533 TO FUND LIBRARY MATERIALS (BOOKS, MEDIA, ETC.), PROGRAMS AT THE LIBRARIES, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER NEEDS, WHICH WERE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR USE OF MATCHING FUNDS. THERE WERE ALSO $2,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED.
THE FRIENDS OF THE SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY, AS A KEY PARTNER OF THE "LIBRARIES TRANSFORM SD" COALITION, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION AND THE BOARD OF LIBRARY COMMISSIONERS, ENGAGED IN EFFECTIVE ADVOCACY DURING THE CITY BUDGET PROCESS TO REVERSE THREATENED LARGE CUTS IN FUNDING, LEADING TO RESTORATION OF LIBRARY HOURS, AND TO SECURE ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR MATERIALS AND PROGRAMS.
