CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH ART. WE ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION BY PROVIDING FREE EXHIBITIONS OF EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED CALIFORNIA AND WEST COAST ARTISTS, EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT DESIGNED TO MAKE ART ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS AND AFFORDABLE ART STUDIOS.

SANCHEZ ART CENTER (SAC) CONTINUED TO BE MINDFUL OF THE HEALTH CIRCUMSTANCES AND THEREFORE DIDNT BEGIN OUR FREE EXHIBITION PROGRAM UNTIL FEBRUARY (ANTICIPATING THE RESURGENCE OF THE COVID-19 VIRUS THAT DID OCCUR OVER THE WINTER). FOURTEEN EXHIBITIONS WERE HELD AND ATTENDANCE IS COMING BACK AFTER THE PANDEMIC (+2380 VISITORS). THE LEFT COAST ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION WAS HELD BOTH IN-PERSON AND VIRTUALLY UTILIZING PLATFORMS THAT WE EXPANDED TO DURING THE PANDEMIC. THE FORMAT FOR A VIRTUAL JUROR & ARTISTS TALK WAS ALSO CONTINUED, PROVIDING THE OPPORTUNITY FOR INCREASED PARTICIPATION FOR ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY FROM ANYWHERE WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION. EXHIBITING ARTISTS IN THE MAIN GALLERY INCLUDED: DANCE DOYLE AND LAURA CORELLO-TITUS, 2019 LEFT COAST ANNUAL EXHIBITION AWARD WINNERS, WHO WERENT ABLE TO SHOW EARLIER DUE TO THE PANDEMIC; AN EXUBERANT COMMUNITY SHOW WITH THE WORKS SANCHEZ ART CENTER STUDIO ARTISTS CURATED BY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JERRY ROSS BARRISH FILLED BOTH THE MAIN AND EAST GALLERIES; AND, A SHOW FULL OF COLORFUL WHIMSY WITH THE BICYCLE HELMET ASSEMBLAGES OF GREGORY FARRAR SCOTT. TWO ADDITIONAL SHOWS IN THE EAST GALLERY REFLECTED THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHAOS INCLUDING SEE CHANGE, REFLECTING ON THE IMPACT OF SEA LEVEL RISE; AND, EXTRACTION, RESPONSE TO THE CHANGING WORLD ENVIRONMENT WITH THE CALIFORNIA SOCIETY OF PRINTMAKERS. THE EXTRACTION SHOW WAS PART OF A MULTI-VENUE NATIONWIDE EVENT SEEKING TO PROVOKE SOCIETAL CHANGE THROUGH THOUGHTFUL MULTI-MEDIA ARTWORKS. THE ART GUILD OF PACIFICA GROUP SHOW THEMES WERE: PERSPECTIVES; ABOUT FACE; AND RESTRUCTURED, PLUS THE ANNUAL MEMBERS SHOWS
SANCHEZ ART CENTERS FOCUS ON ART EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IS REMAINS FUNDAMENTAL TO OUR WORK. THE SANCHEZ GOES TO SCHOOL PROJECT FUNDED AN ARTIST INSTRUCTOR WHO BEGAN THE YEAR PROVIDING 10 VAPA (VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS) STANDARDS LESSONS TO THE STUDENTS AT SUNSET RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL; THE PROGRAM REMAINED VIRTUAL IN FALL 2020 AND RETURNED TO THE CLASSROOM FOR SPRING. SUMMER CAMPS FOR KIDS WERE GRADUALLY RESUMED AFTER LAST YEARS COVID-19 HIATUS, WITH THREE WEEKS OF CAMPS, THAT WERE KEPT SMALL IN SIZE, OFFERED.TWO MULTI-DAY NATURE JOURNALING WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS WERE HELD, THAT PROVIDED AN UPLIFTING CONNECTION WITH OUR ENVIRONMENT AND ARTISTIC PRACTICES. THIS PROGRAM LEAD TO AN ONGOING NATURE JOURNALING GROUP, FURTHERING OUR MISSION OF CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH ART.ART LECTURES AND GALLERY WALKS/TALKS HELD IN PERSON AND VIRTUALLY AND WERE ATTENDED BY APPROXIMATELY 375, WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO ALSO WATCH SOME OF THE PROGRAMMING AT A A LATER TIME VIA A NEW SANCHEZ ART CENTER YOUTUBE CHANNEL, INCREASING CONNECTION WITH THE ARTISTS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR WORK INSPIRATION, TECHNIQUES AND MEDIUMS. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDED: MULTIPLE SMALL OUTDOOR COMMUNITY EVENTS WERE HELD AROUND THE SEE CHANGE EXHIBITION, INCLUDING SMALL GATHERINGS CREATING NEOLOGISMS (NEW WORDS) TO DESCRIBE FEELINGS ABOUT THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND HANDS ON ENGAGEMENT IN RELATED ACTIVITIES. IN RESPONSE TO THE SUMMER OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, SANCHEZ ART CENTER BECAME THE FISCAL SPONSOR OF A LOCAL COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT, THE FOUR DIRECTIONS-UNITY MURAL. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF PACIFICAS BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE, APPROVAL WAS RECEIVED TO CREATE THIS MURAL AT PACIFICA STATE BEACH, LINDA MAR. IN COLLABORATION WITH PACIFICA PEACE PEOPLE, A PEACE POLE WAS PLANTED AT THE SAC CAMPUS, WITH ARTIST AND COMMUNITY MEMBER ROCKS PLACED AT ITS BASE. AN UPLIFTING CELEBRATION WAS HELD OUTDOORS WITH READINGS AND AND SONG AS PART OF A CELEBRATION RECOGNIZING INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY. LARGE COMMUNITY EVENTS (EARTH DAY ECOFEST; PACIFIC COAST FOG FEST; AND THE HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING) WHERE HANDS-ON ART ACTIVITIES HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN PROVIDED WERE AGAIN CANCELLED DUE TO THE HEALTH CRISIS.
