THE MOUNTAIN LION FOUNDATION SUPPORTS POLICIES THAT ENSURE THE NATURAL LONG TERM SURVIVAL OF MOUNTAIN LIONS ACROSS THEIR HISTORIC RANGE. THE FOUNDATION USES RESEARCH, EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, LEGISLATION AND LITIGATION TO INFLUENCE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC POLICIES THAT AFFECT THE ECOSYSTEMS UPON WHICH LIONS DEPEND.

ADVOCACY MLF HAS HELPED TO SECURE FUNDING TO BEGIN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF MULTIPLE OVERPASSES TO RESTORE HABITAT CONNECTIVITY FOR A VARIETY OF SPECIES INCLUDING MOUNTAIN LIONS.
OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATION MLF HAS REACHED OUT IN PERSON, VIA ONLINE MEDIA AND INTERACTIVE VIDEO WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS IN THIS TIME OF COVID ISOLATION. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE COEXISTENCE, REGENERATIVE FARMING, SAFETY, BIOLOGY AND THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. WE HAVE ALSO PARTNERED WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE ON AN INFORMATIONAL BROCHURE ABOUT MOUNTAIN LIONS. SPECIAL WEBINARS AND TOWN HALLS WERE PRESENTED IN AREAS OF WASHINGTON STATE WHERE LION DEPREDATIONS HAD OCCURRED, TEACHING AND ENCOURAGING STRONGER ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND NON-LETHAL MANAGEMENT OF THE COUGARS.
PROTECTION MLF HAS SPOKEN OUT AGAINST UNSUSTAINABLE LION HUNT QUOTAS IN ARIZONA, UTAH, MONTANA, WYOMING, WASHINGTON, OREGON, NEVADA, IDAHO, NEBRASKA AND THE DAKOTAS. MLF ALSO OPPOSED THE CULLING OF MOUNTAIN LIONS BY USING HUNTERS, HOUNDS, BOX TRAPS, LEG TRAPS, SNARES, AND CALLS IN THE HART MOUNTAIN REFUGE IN OREGON IN AN ATTEMPT TO RESTORE BIGHORN SHEEP. MLF ALSO FILED FOR INJUNCTIVE RELIEF TO STOP A SHERIFF IN WASHINGTON STATE FROM KILLING LIONS WITHOUT JUSTIFICATION.
