Part 3

PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS CREATES A UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO WITNESS THE PROCESS OF ART IN THE MAKING. DURING OUR 2017 FISCAL YEAR, 103 ARTISTS OPENED THEIR STUDIOS TO THE COMMUNITY. MORE THAN 3,000 TICKETS WERE DISTRIBUTED, ALLOWING AS MANY AS 6,000 ADULTS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO EXPLORE ARTISTS' STUDIOS AND LEARN ABOUT THE MEDIA, MATERIALS, AND BUSINESS OF THE CREATIVE ENDEAVOR. IN ADDITION, PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS ACCOMPLISHED THE FOLLOWING OF PUBLIC BENEFIT DURING ITS 2016-2017 YEAR: PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS CONTINUED ITS EDUCATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, DESIGNED TO CONNECT HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH WORKING ARTIST MENTORS. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM MORE THAN 30 HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS WERE PAIRED WITH ARTISTS DURING THE PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS 2017 TOUR. IN THE COURSE OF THE INTERNSHIPS STUDENTS RECEIVED PORTFOLIO REVIEWS, PERSONALIZED, ART LESSONS (IN SOME CASES WITH MATERIALS THAT STUDENTS WOULD NOT HAVE OTHERWISE HAD ACCESS), AND LEARNED ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF AN ARTIST'S STUDIO, AND WHAT IT TAKES TO DEVELOP A CAREER IN THE ARTS. PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS CONTINUES TO OFFER THE KIMBERLY GALES SCHOLARSHIP TO EMERGING ARTISTS. THIS SCHOLARSHIP IS AVAILABLE TO APPLICANTS BETWEEN THE AGES OF TWENTY AND THIRTY, WAIVES THE TOUR'S PARTICIPATION FEE, AND PAYS A $100 STIPEND IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE FINANCIAL BARRIER WHICH MIGHT PREVENT YOUNG ARTISTS FROM PARTICIPATING. ADDITIONALLY, THE RECIPIENTS' WORK IS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE TOUR GUIDE AND IN PRESS RELEASES, PROVIDING INCREASED EXPOSURE FOR THE ARTIST.
