COWLITZ WAHKIAKUM LEGAL AID SEEKS TO ASSURE JUSTICE FOR LOW INCOME PEOPLE IN THE CIVIL COURTS. WE PROVIDE ACCESS TO LEGAL HELP FOR PEOPLE WHOSE LIVELIHOOD, FAMILY AND WELLNESS ARE THREATEN.

COWLITZ WAHKIAKUM LEGAL AID (CWLA) PROVIDES FREE LEGAL HELP FOR CIVIL LEGAL ISSUES FOR VERY LOW INCOME PEOPLE IN COWLITZ AND WAHKIAKUM COUNTIES. WE DO THIS WORK WITH THE HELP OF NON-ATTORNEY STAFF, VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS, AND CONTRACTED AND STAFF ATTORNEYS. 1. INTAKE/INCREASE IN NEW CASES/SHIFTS IN CASE TYPES: CWLA OPERATED REMOTELY MOST OF THE YEAR (COVID 19) BUT STILL RECEIVED AND RETURNED CALLS FROM POTENTIAL CLIENTS AND PERFORMED INTAKE WITH CLIENTS OVER THE PHONE TO GET THEM STARTED WITH OUR SERVICES. 2. FORMS WORKSHOPS AND ADVICE CLINICS: CWLA WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE (SAFE) IN-PERSON FORMS WORKSHOPS FOR FAMILY LAW AND ALSO LEGAL ADVICE APPOINTMENTS WITH ATTORNEYS IN PERSON, OVER THE PHONE, AND OVER ZOOM DURING 2021 FOR MANY TYPES OF CIVIL LEGAL ISSUES. 3. CASE MANAGEMENT/ REFERRALS TO OTHER HELP/ RESOURCES: CWLA CONTINUED TO OFFER REFERRALS TO OTHER AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS AND DUE TO INCREASED STAFFING LEVELS ALLOWED BY INCREASED FUNDING, WAS ABLE TO UPGRADE THE TIME AND QUALITY OF OUR CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC.
