WILDLAND ADVOCACY - IN 2021, WA WILD LED STATEWIDE COALITION EFFORTS TO PERMANENTLY PROTECT WILD LANDS AND WATERS IN THE NORTH CASCADES AND OLYMPIC PENINSULA. AS A MEMBER OF THE WILD OLYMPICS CAMPAIGN, WA WILD WORKED TO INCREASE LOCAL SUPPORT FOR NEW WILDERNESS AND WILD AND SCENIC RIVER PROTECTIONS ON OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST AND OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK TO MORE THAN 800 LOCAL BUSINESSES, ELECTED OFFICIALS AND CONSERVATION, RECREATION, HUNTING AND FISHING ORGANIZATIONS. THE WILD OLYMPICS LEGISLATION PASSED THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME. WA WILD ALSO WORKED AS PART OF A COALITION TO IDENTIFY AND PURSUE THE FIRST-EVER OUTSTANDING RESOURCE WATER DESIGNATIONS FOR THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.
WILDLANDS DEFENSE - IN 2021, WA WILD LED STATEWIDE EFFORTS TO OPPOSE THREATS TO WILD LANDS AND WATERS FROM MINING, UNSUSTAINABLE LOGGING, NEW DAM CONSTRUCTION AND OTHER DEVELOPMENT. DURING THE YEAR, WA WILD COORDINATED 11 SIGN-ON LETTERS WITH NEARLY 600 SIGNATORIES OPPOSING: EFFORTS TO ALLOW LOW ELEVATION OVERFLIGHTS OVER MOUNT RAINIER AND OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK; THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW ROADS AND MINING THREATS IN NATIONAL FOREST ROADLESS AREAS; AND MINING AND LOGGING IN THE SKAGIT HEADWATERS. WA WILD SUPPORTED FUNDING FOR ROAD AND TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS AND WATERSHED RESTORATION ON NATIONAL FOREST LANDS AND NEW REGULATIONS PROTECTING SALMON HABITAT FROM MOTORIZED SUCTION DREDGE MINING STATEWIDE. WA WILD ALSO SENT OUT 13 ACTION ALERTS, GARNERING MORE THAN 2,200 MESSAGES TO KEY DECISION MAKERS ON PROTECTING WASHINGTON'S WILD PLACES.
OUTREACH & EDUCATION - IN 2021, WA WILD ADAPTED TO THE COVID PANDEMIC TO CONTINUE TO EDUCATE AND MOBILIZE WASHINGTON RESIDENTS AROUND WILD LANDS AND WATERS ISSUES. WE HELD 11 VIRTUAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH EVENTS WITH 12 PARTNERS AS PART OF OUR BREWSHED ALLIANCE AND OTHER EFFORTS. WE GENERATED 13 ACTION ALERTS RESULTING IN MORE THAN 2,200 MESSAGES TO DECISION MAKERS, OPPOSING MINING IN THE SKAGIT HEADWATERS, SUPPORTING LEGISLATIVE PROTECTIONS ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA, STANDING UP FOR OUR ROADLESS AREAS, AND SUPPORTING FUNDING THROUGH THE LEGACY ROADS AND TRAILS PROGRAM.
