Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

THE DEEP MEDICINE CIRCLE IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO HEALING THE WOUNDS OF COLONIALISM THROUGH FOOD, MEDICINE, STORY AND LEARNING. STARTING FROM A PLACE OF CORRECTING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INDIGENOUS AND NON-INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, WE CULTIVATE A CULTURE OF CARE TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH AND HEALING OF PEOPLE, AND COMMUNITIES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS WHICH ARE CRITICAL FOR OUR SURVIVAL AND THRIVING.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE ORGANIZATION PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON FOOD PRODUCTION, MOVING 1.25 ACRES OF FALLOW FIELDS INTO AGROECOLOGICAL PRODUCTION ON OUR RURAL FARM AND STARTED GROWING ON THE 0.75 ACRE ROOFTOP FARM. TOGETHER, THESE FARMS GENERATED OVER 36,000 LBS OF FOOD WHICH WAS GIVEN AWAY TO PEOPLE EXPERIENCING FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. WE ASSEMBLED A DATA SCIENCE TEAM TO START CAPTURING OUR DATA ON FOOD PRODUCTION, LABOR HOURS, SOIL QUALITY, WATER QUALITY, BIODIVERSITY AND IMPACT OF FOOD PRODUCTION AND DELIVERY ON FARMERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO STARTED OUR JOB TRAINING PROGRAM WITH A 10 WEEK FELLOWSHIP, OFFERING URBAN YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN ABOUT AGROECOLOGY AND TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE. OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ALSO INVOLVED BRINGING PEDIATRICS MEDICAL RESIDENTS TO THE FARM TO LEARN ABOUT FOOD AS MEDICINE AND FARMING TECHNIQUES THAT INCREASE THE NUTRITIOUS QUALITY OF FOOD. WE REPAIRED THE 6000 SQUARE FOOT FLOORING OF OUR BARN IN ORDER TO SAFELY HOST ACTIVITIES AND FARM EQUIPMENT. THE ORGANIZATION INVESTED IN EXTENSIVE EARTHWORKS WITH MORE SWALES TO SLOW AND SINK WATER, WHICH GREATLY IMPACTED OUR FARM'S SUCCESS DURING HEAVY RAINS--WE EXPERIENCED NO FLOODING. WE CONVENED 60 AREA ARTISTS, ACTIVISTS AND TEACHERS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF OUR FOOD GROWING AND TO START THE STORYTELLING WORK OF THE ORGANIZATION. WE CONVENED ADVISORS AND DECIDED TO DEVELOP A NEW PROGRAM TO BRIDGE INDIGENOUS AND NON-INDIGENOUS RELATIONSHIPS. FINALLY, WE IMPLEMENTED OUR HEAL THE HEALERS PROGRAM, BRINGING FRONTLINE HEALTHCARE WORKERS TO THE FARM TO ADDRESS PANDEMIC TRAUMA AND BURNOUT THROUGH GENTLE GARDENING ACTIVITIES AND STORYTELLING CIRCLES.
