THE ROSWELL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (RSO) HAS EARNED A REPUTATION FOR MUSICAL EXCELLENCE THROUGH MAESTRO JOHN FARRER'S PROGRAMMING AND THE TALENT OF THE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS THAT COMPRISE THE ORCHESTRA. OUR MUSICIANS COME FROM MAJOR CITIES WITHIN A 200-MILE RADIUS OF ROSWELL: LUBBOCK, AMARILLO, SANTA FE, ALBUQUERQUE, LAS CRUCES, EL PASO, ALAMOGORDO, AND ROSWELL ITSELF. JOHN FARRER BECAME THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR OF THE RSO DURING THE 1972 SEASON. UNDER HIS DIRECTION, THE RSO HAS PERFORMED MUSIC SPANNING MULTIPLE CENTURIES AND GENRES FROM BACH TO BERNSTEIN, OFTEN WITH INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN GUEST ARTISTS, RANGING FROM VIOLINISTS TO CLASSICAL GUITARTISTS. EVERY YEAR, THE RSO PROVIDES 1500 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS OF SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR AND ENJOY CLASSICAL MUSIC. THE 4TH GRADE "YOUNG PERSON'S CONCERT" IS, FOR MANY, THE BEGINNING OF A LIFE-LONG LOVE OF MUSIC, INSTRUMENTS, AND THE ARTS. OUR "SHADOW EXPERIENCE" PROGRAM ALLOWS THE BEST MUSICIANS FROM HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND THE AREA TO PERFORM WITH A PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA AND BE MENTORED BY THE MUSICIANS. WE ALSO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH BY PROVIDING ALL STUDENTS WITH FREE TICKETS TO ALL CONCERTS.
