Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH FISH WELFARE IN THE HIGH-PRIORITY CONTEXT OF AQUACULTURE IN INDIA, WE CONDUCTED THREE IN-FIELD STUDIES ON FARMING CONDITIONS THERE. RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES MAY BE FOUND ON OUR BLOG (WWW.FWI.FISH/BLOG) AND OUR RESEARCH PAGE (WWW.FWI.FISH/RESEARCH). WE ALSO MADE SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR RESEARCH PROCESS, INCLUDING PARTNERING WITH A LOCAL UNIVERSITY TO CONSTRUCT MODEL PONDS THAT CAN BE USED FOR FUTURE RESEARCH.
ANIMAL WELFARE
WE CONDUCTED ANOTHER IN-COUNTRY FIELD VISIT, CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEIJING CONSENSUS CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE FISH WELFARE, AND IDENTIFIED PRIORITY SPECIES FOR WHOM TO BEGIN SETTING STANDARDS WITH OUR LOCAL CHINESE PARTNERS (ICCAW). WE BUILT MANY POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH KEY CHINESE STAKEHOLDERS THAT WILL BE SIGNIFICANT FOR ADVANCING THE FIELD AND IDEA OF FISH WELFARE IN CHINA OVER THE YEARS TO COME.
THROUGH OUR SERVICE CONTRACTOR IN INDIA, WE SUPPORTED ABOUT 100 ACTIVE FARMS IN HAVING HIGHER WELFARE PRACTICES, WHICH IS 16 MORE THAN AT THE END OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR. WE WORKED WITH THESE FARMERS TO IMPROVE PRACTICES ON THE FARM, PARTICULARLY REGARDING LOWERING STOCKING DENSITIES TO SUSTAINABLE LEVELS AND IMPROVING WATER QUALITY. THIS YEAR, WE ESTIMATE THAT THIS PROGRAM IMPROVED THE LIVES OF 450,000 FISH.
