THE MONTEZUMA SCHOOL TO FARM PROJECT UNITES OUR LOCAL AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE WITH OUR GROWING FUTURE BY ENGAGING STUDENTS AT THE CROSSROADS OF FOOD PRODUCTION, RESOURCE CONSERVATION, AND NUTRITION THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES.

MONTEZUMA SCHOOL TO FARM PROJECT PROVIDES MONTHLY GARDEN LESSONS FOR PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SIX ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY, CATERING TO OVER 1,200 STUDENTS. THESE LESSONS INCLUDE CRITICAL CONCEPTS FOR STEAM TOPICS THAT ALIGHN WITH COLORADO STATE ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS, TASTINGS OF NUTRITIONAL FOODS WITHIN THE GARDENS, AND HOLISTIC MODELS THAT INCLUDE ASPECTS OF SEVERAL INTERCONNECTING DISCIPLINES. THESE LESSONS ARE THE ORGANIZATIONS LARGEST AND MOST CONSISTENT PROGRAM. MONTEZUMA SCHOOL TO FARM PROJECT UTILIZES ITS SEVEN SCHOOL GARDENS AND A TWO ACRE PRODUCTION PLOT TO GROW FOOD AND DONATE IT TO THE COMMUNITY. USING RESOURCE CONSERVING AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PROCESSES, THE ORGANIZATION RESPONSIBLY GROWS LOCAL, ORGANIC, AND NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD. ALL THE FOOD IS DISTRIBUTED TO THE COMMUNITY VIA DONATIONS TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FOOD PANTRIES, AND FOOD SHARES. DURING 2022, THE ORGANIZATION WAS ABLE TO OFFER FOUR WEEKS OF SUMMER PROGRAMING SERVING 25 LOCAL FAMILIES, FREE OF COST TO ALL IN ATTENDANCE. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO EXPANDED PROGRAM ACTIVITIES IN DOLORES, MANCOS, AND CORTEZ COLORADO BY OFFERING ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES ON FRIDAYS WHEN STUDENTS WERE NOT IN SCHOOL. THE ORGANIZATION SERVED 393 STUDENTS IN THESE FRIDAY PROGRAMS. FINALLY, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED 212 LESSONS TO MONTEZUMA COUNTY STUDENTS, ACHIEVING 11,578 STUDENT CONTACT HOURS AND SERVING OVER 1,600 STUDENTS ANNUALLY.
