Part 3
THIS PAST YEAR THE UPCYCLED FACILITY BEGAN CONSTRUCTION AND REACHED 95% COMPLETION, THE WASTE WARRIOR PROGRAM WAS INTRODUCED AND REACHED OVER 25 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, THE WASTE TO WONDER PROGRAM "UPCYCLED" OVER 3,600 POUNDS OF PLASTIC. OUR PLAN WAS TO CONVERT OUR RECYCLING CENTER INTO A WAREHOUSE SPACE THAT COULD BE USED AS A RECYCLING CENTER. THIS PROJECT IS 95% COMPLETE, WITH ONLY BGE TO INSTALL ELECTRICITY, AND SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF FEBRUARY! THIS PROJECT HAS ALLOWED OUR ORGANIZATION TO INCREASE OUR PLASTIC AMOUNT UPCYCLED FROM 2,000 POUNDS TO OVER 3,600 POUNDS THIS YEAR, WHILE HOSTING A SUMMER INTERNSHIP AND AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM. UPCYCLED'S WASTE WARRIOR PROGRAM AIMS TO PROVIDE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HOWARD COUNTY WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING AND COLLABORATION WITH THEIR PEERS. THIS PROGRAM CONSISTS OF TWO MAIN COMPONENTS: A 5-WEEK SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, AND A SERIES OF AFTER-SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL CLASSES THAT OCCUR THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE WASTE TO WONDER PROJECT ARE TO EXPAND COMMUNITY AWARENESS REGARDING THE PLASTIC CRISIS, ENCOURAGE RECYCLING THROUGH THE CREATION OF LUMBER AND OTHER LONG-TERM USE PRODUCTS FROM RECYCLED PLASTICS, AND TO REDUCE WASTE IN LANDFILLS. WASTE TO WONDER SAW AN INCREASE IN PLASTIC "UPCYCLED" FROM 2022 TO 2023. 2,000 POUNDS OF UPCYCLED LUMBER HAS BEEN OR IS BEING DONATED TO COMMUNITY LOCATIONS ACROSS HOWARD COUNTY.
