Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
ME SQUARED CANCER FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORT TO RECENTLY DIAGNOSED CANCER PATIENTS IN THE DFW AREA IN NEED, IN THE FORM OF ASSISTANCE WITH INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLES, INSURANCE EDUCATION, WIGS FOR CANCER PATIENTS SUFFERING HAIR LOSS, AND CLOTHING ITEMS HELPFUL FOR CANCER PATIENTS RECEIVING CHEMOTHERAPY. EVEN WITH HEALTH INSURANCE, THE FINANCIAL BURDENS OF A CANCER DIAGNOSIS CAN BE DEVASTATING. MANY PATIENTS WE WORK WITH HAVE DEDUCTIBLES AND OUT OF POCKET LIMITS AS HIGH AS 8,500 AT A TIME WHEN THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO WORK. OFTEN THIS LEAVES THEM WITH THE DILEMMA OF EITHER PROVIDING FOOD AND SHELTER FOR THEIR FAMILY OR PAYING FOR THE CARE THEY NEED. WE DON'T WANT THEM TO HAVE TO MAKE THAT CHOICE. IN 2021 WE PROVIDED 155,000 IN AID TO 59 NEWLY DIAGNOSED CANCER PATIENTS, INCLUDING 12 WITH NO HEALTH INSURANCE. OF THAT AMOUNT 95% WENT TO PATIENTS EARNING LESS THAN 400% OF THE FEDERAL POVERTY LINE. PAYMENTS ARE ALWAYS MADE DIRECTLY TO TREATMENT PROVIDERS. IN ADDITION TO THE FINANCIAL BURDEN OF A CANCER DIAGNOSIS, PATIENTS ARE OFTEN EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATED AND FEEL ALONE DURING HOSPITAL STAYS, CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENTS, AND RADIATION TREATMENTS. ME SQUARED PROVIDES "CARING BAGS" TO PATIENTS UNDERGOING TREATMENT TO HELP KEEP THEM COMFORTABLE AND THEIR MIND OCCUPIED WITH PLEASANT ACTIVITIES. PATIENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH A BAG THAT INCLUDES A WARM BLANKET, A WARM HAT, SOCKS, HAND SANITIZER, AND FACE MASKS. THE BAG ALSO CONTAINS AN INSPIRATIONAL BOOK, A JOURNAL, AND ACTIVITES TO KEEP THEM OCCUPIED. THE BAGS ARE DELIVERED IN BOXES DECORATED BY YOUNG WOMEN FROM THE LOCAL NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE CHAPTER TO HELP CHEER UP THE PATIENTS AND LET THEM KNOW THAT OTHERS CARE ABOUT THEM. DURING 2021 WE DELIVERED 108 CARING BAGS TO PATIENTS AT A TOTAL COST OF 4,085. PATIENTS ARE ALWAYS DELIGHTED TO RECEIVE THE BAGS AND ALWAYS TELL US HOW MUCH RECEIVING IT RAISED THEIR SPIRITS.
