THE MISSION OF THE CORPORATION SHALL BE TO WORK WITH PARTNERS TO PROTECT AND RESTORE NATIVE ECOSYSTEMS AND WATERSHEDS, TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF FRESHWATER RESOURCES, TO PERPETUATE HAWAIIAN CULTURAL RESOURCES AND PRACTICES, TO SUPPORT RURAL ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES, AND TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN THESE EFFORTS ON LEEWARD HALEAKALA, THROUGHOUT MAUI NUI, AND SIMILAR SITES AS APPROPRIATE.

LEEWARD HALEAKALA WATERSHED RESTORATION PARTNERSHIP (LHWRP) PROGRAM OPERATIONS: ON 11/15/21 THE LHWRP STAFF TRANSITIONED FROM BEING A SPONSORED PROJECT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I TO A FISCALLY SPONSORED PROGRAM OF UHIWAI O HALEAKALA. THIS TRANSITION INVOLVED ONBOARDING THE LHWRP STAFF VIA A PEO AND SECURING STORAGE AND OFFICE SPACE FOR LHWRP OPERATIONS. COMPUTERS AND SOFTWARE WERE PURCHASED TO ENABLE STAFF TO CONTINUE TO WORK FROM A HOME OFFICE.
LEEWARD HALEAKALA WATERSHED RESTORATION PARTNERSHIP (LHWRP) PROGRAM CONSERVATION: MOST OF LHWRP'S PROJECT SITES ARE IN REMOTE LOCATIONS ONLY ACCESSIBLE VIA HELICOPTER. WORKERS COMPENSATION COVERING AVIATION WAS SECURED AND STAFF WERE CLEARED FOR HELI TRANSPORT IN DECEMBER 2021 WITH BACKCOUNTRY OPERATIONS TO RESUME STARTING JANUARY 2022. LHWRP FIELD STAFF SUCCESSFULLY FOCUSED ITS OPERATIONS ON FRONT COUNTRY PROJECT SITES CONDUCTING NATIVE SEED COLLECTION AND WEED WORK FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2021.
LEEWARD HALEAKALA WATERSHED RESTORATION PARTNERSHIP (LHWRP) PROGRAM OUTREACH: LHWRP'S OUTREACH COORDINATOR WORKED WITH A DESIGNER AND HAMLINE UNIVERSITY TO CREATE DIGITAL LEARNING MODULES THAT WILL BE INSTALLED ON INTERACTIVE KIOSKS OR INSTALLED ON A PORTABLE DEVICE THAT CAN BE USED TO DO PRESENTATIONS AT SCHOOLS OR EVENTS.
