THE MISSION OF THE CORPORATION SHALL BE TO WORK WITH PARTNERS TO PROTECT AND RESTORE NATIVE ECOSYSTEMS AND WATERSHEDS, TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF FRESHWATER RESOURCES TO PERPETUATE HAWAIIAN CULTURAL RESOURCES AND PRACTICES, TO SUPPORT RURAL ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES, AND TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN THESE EFFORTS ON LEEWARD HALEAKALA, THROUGHOUT MAUI NUI, AND SIMILAR SITES AS APPROPRIATE.

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE REMAINING TRANSITION OF THE LEEWARD HALEAKALA WATERSHED RESTORATION PARTNERSHIP (LHWRP) PROGRAM TO UHIWAI CONTINUED UP THROUGH JULY 2023. UHIWAI WELCOMED NEW BOARD MEMBERS IN AUGUST OF 2023. FIELD OPERATIONS CONTINUED AS PROJECT SITE ACCESS WAS TRANSITIONED TO UHIWAI FOR ALL GRANTS AND SERVICE AGREEMENTS. NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES WERE SECURED UNDER UHIWAI. OPERATIONS CONTINUED TO BE CONDUCTED FROM HOME OFFICE SPACES WITH THE EXPENSES FOR "RENT AND UTILITIES" DONATED AS IN-KIND SERVICES.


CONSERVATION: FENCE INSPECTIONS, SEED COLLECTION, INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES REMOVAL AND OUTPLANTING ACTIVITIES CONTINUED AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HAWAIIAN HOME LANDS, NU'U MAUKA AND WAIOHULI MANA PROJECT SITES. CONTRACT SERVICES WERE ENLISTED TO ACCELERATE AXIS DEER REMOVAL FROM PARTNERING AREAS WHEN POSSIBLE. FRONT COUNTRY SEED COLLECTION AND WEED WORK CONTINUED AT PU'U- O-KALI, NU'U MAUKA NATIVE SEED FARM AND 'OMA'OPIO. PROPAGATION OF SEEDS COLLECTED WAS DONE AT A LOCAL NURSERY.


OUTREACH: STAFF PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL PUBLIC OUTREACH EVENTS. A COMMUNICATIONS AND BRANDING CONTRACTOR WAS BROUGHT IN TO STRENGTHEN OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE, REFRESH OUR WEBSITE AND PREPARE FOR THE LAUNCHING OF A NEWLY REVISED OUTREACH AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.
