INSPIRED BY THE UNSELFISH LIVES OF CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER AND U.S. CONGRESSMAN, JOHN LEWIS, AND HIS WIFE, LILLIAN MILES LEWIS., THE MISSION OF THE JOHN AND LILLIAN MILES LEWIS FOUNDATION, INC. IS TO PROMOTE NONVIOLENCE, VOTING RIGHTS, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, SOCIAL JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, INTERNATIONAL PEACE, HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND TO PRESERVE AND STUDY AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE AND THE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. THE FOUNDATION WAS FOUNDED IN 2017 AS A GEORGIA NONPROFIT CORPORATION. IT WAS QUALIFIED BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE AS A TAX EXEMPT 501(C)(3) CORPORATION IN 2019.

PROMOTE NONVIOLENCE, VOTING RIGHTS, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, SOCIAL JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, INTERNATIONAL PEACE, HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND TO PRESERVE AND STUDY AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE AND THE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. THE FOUNDATION DID NOT BEGIN TO FUNCTION UNTIL LATE 2020, FOLLOWING THE CONGRESSMAN'S DEATH, WHEN IT BEGAN TO DEVELOP A STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK AND BUILD AN INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THEORGANIZATION.
