IEPS EDUCATION PROGRAM SPONSORS A LOCAL PRE-K THROUGH 6TH GRADE SCHOOL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TECPÁN IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHIMALTENANGO, GUATEMALA. ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR WAS 325 STUDENTS. IEP PROVIDED A NUTRITIOUS MEAL EACH SCHOOL DAY, PURCHASED TEXT BOOKS AND WORK BOOKS FOR EACH PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENT AND MANUALS FOR EACH TEACHER AND PROVIDED ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDING LIBRARYK COMPUTER, ENGLISH AND MUSIC. MONTHLY DISTRIBUTIONS OF FOOD BAGS (SHELF STABLE AND FRESH FOODSTUFFS SUCH AS RICE, BEANS, COFFEE, EGGS AND POWDERED MILK) WERE MADE TO EACH SCHOOL FAMILY. ADDITIONALLY, IEP OPERATED A SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN TO CONTINUE STUDYING AFTER THE 6TH GRADE. THIS PROGRAM USES TABLETS LOADED WITH MINISTRY APPROVED CURRICULUM.
IEPS COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM INSTALLS SMOKE-FREE STOVES AND WATER FILTERS IN THE HOMES OF IMPOVERISHED FAMILIES. THE STOVES REPLACE THE TRADITIONAL OPEN FIRES USED FOR COOKING AND HEAT AND USE LESS THAN 1/3 OF THE FUEL (WOOD) USED IN OPEN FIRES. 45 STOVES AND WATER FILTERS WERE INSTALLED IN 2020. TWO ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS WERE ADDED TO THE COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM IN 2020 TO COMBAT THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF COVID. FIRST, A FOOD AID PROGRAM CALLED BAGS OF HOPE WAS STARTED TO PROVIDE FOOD ASSITANCE TO FAMILIES WHO LOST INCOME DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. A TOTAL OF 2,789 BAGS (INCLUDING 16,255 POUNDS OF RICE, 8,881 POUNDS OF BEANS, AND 8,835 EGGS) WERE DISTRIBUTED IN 2020. SECONDLY, THE MASKS FOR A PURPOSE PROGRAM WAS STARTED TO PROTECT THE LIVELIHOOD OF UP TO 150 GUATEMALAN TEXTILE WORKERS. IEP STAFF DESIGNED AND SOURCED A MASK MADE OF TYPICAL GUATEMALAN CLOTH. PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THESE MASKS WENT TO PURCHASE FOOD FOR THE BAGS OF HOPE.
