THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK WE DO IS ANTI-POACHING AND CONSERVATION IN THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK, SAPI AND CHEWORE SAFARI AREAS, AND THE SURROUNDING ZAMBEZI VALLEY OF ZIMBABWE. WE PROVIDE VEHICLES, DRIVERS, FUEL, RATIONS, AND REMOTE BASES FOR ANTI-POACHING PATROLS; MONITOR AND TRACK ICONIC BULL ELEPHANTS AND CARNIVORES INCLUDING LIONS, LEOPARDS, AND HYENAS; DEVELOP INFRASTRUCTURE TO ESTABLISH ONGOING RANGER PRESENCE IN VULNERABLE AREAS; PROVIDE FUNDING TO SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITY HEALTH, WELFARE, AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS; AND ASSIST NATIONAL PARKS IN PROTECTING HABITAT FROM ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES AND MANAGING HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
NO ELEPHANTS WERE POACHED IN MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK DURING THE YEAR. ALL COLLARED ELEPHANTS WERE PROTECTED FROM LEGAL HUNTERS. FUNDING WAS PROVIDED FOR THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN MANA POOLS AND THE SURROUNDING ZAMBEZI VALLEY OF ZIMBABWE: (1) CAPTURE AND TRANSLOCATION OF 4 ZEBRAS FROM MHANGURA, A FARMING AREA IN NORTHERN ZIMBABWE, TO LAKE CHIVERO NATIONAL PARK, THIS ACTION BEING NECESSARY BECAUSE THESE ANIMALS WERE EATING THE FARMERS' CROPS; (2) CAPTURE, COLLARING, AND TRANSLOCATION OF A LEOPARD THAT HAD KILLED A DOZEN GOATS IN HOTEL VILLAGE ON THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MANA POOLS. FOLLOWING THE TRACKING AVAILABLE THROUGH HER COLLAR, WE NOTED THAT SHE BECAME RESIDENT IN THE MUKWICHI COMMUNITY WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY; (3) CONDUCT OF MULTIPLE WILDLIFE AWARENESS MEETINGS IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES ON THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MANA POOLS FOR CHILDREN IN OUR NEW CONSERVATION CLUBS AND FOR LARGE GROUPS OF VILLAGE MEMBERS, RE-ENFORCING THE VALUE OF THE ZIMBABWEAN NATURAL HERITAGE AND WILDLIFE/ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION; (4) COLLARING OF 11 ELEPHANTS IN THE HURUNGWE SAFARI AREA, CHEWORE SAFARI AREA, AND IN THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS OF MANA POOLS, PROVIDING THEM PROTECTION FROM LEGAL HUNTERS, EARLY WARNING FOR POSSIBLE HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT, AND RESEARCH THAT INCLUDES MONITORING THE DIFFERENCES IN ELEPHANT MOVEMENTS AND THE SIZE OF THEIR HOME RANGES IN HUNTING AREAS COMPARED TO NON-HUNTING AREAS; (5) PURCHASE OF TWO VEHICLES FOR USE IN ANTI-POACHING WORK AND PAYING YEAR AROUND OPERATING COSTS FOR AVERAGE DEPLOYMENT OF 30 ZIMPARKS RANGERS DAILY; AND (6) INITIAL CONSTRUCTION OF A PERMANENT BASE ON THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MANA POOLS AND MANNING OF A VACANT BASE ON THE MANA EAST BOUNDARY.
