EACH CHAPTER DESIGNATES A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE COUNCIL OF CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVES (CCR). THE CCR THEN ELECTS A CHAIR, AND THAT INDIVIDUAL, ALONG WITH THE IMMEDIATE PAST CCR CHAIR AND CCR CHAIR ELECT, ACT AS VOTING MEMBERS ON THE ATS BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THE CHAPTERS AND CCR ARE INTEGRAL TO THE IDENTITY OF THE AMERICAN THORACIC SOCIETY, AS THEY PROVIDE A FORUM IN WHICH CLINICIANS ARE ABLE TO REACH A CONSENSUS ON ISSUES OF EDUCATION, PRACTICE, RESEARCH, AND PUBLIC POLICY AND PRESENT THEIR FINDINGS AND CONCERNS TO THE SOCIETY. THESE CHAPTERS ALSO SERVE AS A PATH TO LEADERSHIP FOR CLINICIAN MEMBERS. CHAPTERS HOLD MEETINGS AND PRODUCE EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATIONS. THE OUTSTANDING CLINICIAN AWARD AND GREAT CASES SYMPOSIUM ARE SPONSORED EACH YEAR BY THE CCR AND PRESENTED AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE.
