FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, SERVE YOUR CITY (SYC) HAS PROVIDED LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR AT-RISK DC STUDENTS, GIVING BLACK AND BROWN CHILDREN ACCESS TO ROWING, SWIMMING, YOGA, TENNIS, TUTORING, AND INSPIRING EXPERIENCES OFTEN NOT READILY AVAILABLE TO CHILDREN FROM UNDER-RESOURCED FAMILIES. SINCE MARCH 2020, SYC HAS ALSO SERVED AS THE INFRASTRUCTURE HUB FOR WARD 6 MUTUAL AID, A PARTNERSHIP OF MORE THAN THREE DOZEN ORGANIZATIONS THAT CAME TOGETHER TO SHARE RESOURCES AND SAVE LIVES AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC STRUCK THE DISTRICT.

MUTUAL AID: THROUGH THIS WORK, SYC PROVIDES FOOD, PPE, BASIC NEEDS SUPPLY, DIAPERS, AND FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN NEED, INCLUDING WEEKLY CRITICAL SUPPLY DISTRIBUTION TO OUR UNHOUSED NEIGHBORS LIVING IN ENCAMPMENTS. THIS PROGRAM IS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN DC WARDS 5, 6, 7, AND 8 AND HAS PROVIDED OVER 30,000 UNITS OF SERVICE.
PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN: SYC PRODUCED A PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN TO PROVIDE HEALTH EDUCATION RESOURCES TO HELP THE COMMUNITY UNDERSTAND HOW TO AVOID COVID-19. AS VACCINES WERE DEVELOPED, SYC ALSO CREATED A CAMPAIGN ABOUT THE SAFETY AND IMPORTANCE OF THE VACCINE. SYC WORKS TO EQUALIZE ACCESS TO TESTING AND THE VACCINE BY CREATING AND RUNNING ITS OWN HOTLINE AS WELL AS DELIVERING FREE COVID-19 TESTING KITS ON A WEEKLY BASIS.
YOUTH EDUCATION AND ENRICHMENT, ENCOMPASSING THREE PROJECTS: 1) FREE SCHOOL FOR UNLIMITED YOUTH - THIS PROGRAM OFFERS FREE IN-PERSON AND ONLINE TUTORING AND PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY COST-PROHIBITIVE FOR OUR LOCAL BLACK AND BROWN YOUTH. DURING THE PANDEMIC, SYC'S VIRTUAL TUTORING PROGRAM MATCHED 130 STUDENTS WITH TUTORS LIVING IN OUR COMMUNITY AND FROM DC'S LOCAL COLLEGE CAMPUSES. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ROWING, AQUATICS, TENNIS, EQUESTRIAN, YOGA, TRAPEZE, AND THE ARTS. 2) ADDRESSING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE: SYC HAS DISTRIBUTED OVER 1000 DEVICES (INCLUDING LAPTOPS, WIFI ACCESS AND HOT SPOTS) TO YOUTH AND ADULTS IN WASHINGTON, DC TO ENABLE STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY TO ACCESS VIRTUAL SCHOOLING DURING THE PANDEMIC. 3) SYC TECH: TRAINS LOCAL YOUTH TO REFURBISH AND THEN REDISTRIBUTE COMPUTERS IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES.
