OPERATION OF A RESTORED RAILROAD DEPOT/MUSEUM AND 100+ YEAR OLD FARMHOUSE WITH RELATED OUTBUILDINGS PRESERVING AND DEPICTING NORTHEAST TEXAS LIFE CIRCA 1900 AND GOING FORWARD.

THE DEPOT MUSEUM EXHIBITS RAILROAD AND RELATED ARTIFACTS AND MEMORABILIA DEPICTING THE IMPORTANCE OF RAIL SERVICES TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOCAL AREA IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, INCLUDING A WORKING TELEGRAPHY EXHIBIT. OTHER EXHIBITS INCLUDE INDIAN ARTIFACTS, AGRICULTURAL TOOLS, PRODUCTS, AND EQUIPMENT, AS WELL AS A ROTATING EXHIBIT AREA SPOTLIGHTING LOCAL BUSINESSES AND INDUSTRIES. THIS FACILITY OPERATES THREE DAYS PER WEEK AND IS STAFFED BY A PAID FACILITY MANAGER AND VOLUNTEER DOCENTS. THIS VENUE IS NORMALLY VISITED BY APPROXIMATELY 1000 INDIVIDUALS EACH YEAR FROM MULTIPLE STATES AND FOREIGN COUNTRIES.


THE DEPOT ANNEX FOCUSES ON THE MUSEUM'S REPLICA OF THE EZEKIEL AIRSHIP, WHICH REPORTEDLY FLEW BEFORE THE WRIGHT BROTHER'S FIRST FLIGHT. OTHER EXHIBITS INCLUDE AN ART GALLERY DISPLAYING THE WORKS OF LOCAL ARTISTS, THE LAST SHELBY MUSTANG PURCHASED BY SHELBY, AND PRESENTS BUSINESSES, INDUSTRIES, AND INDIVIDUALS WHOSE CONTRIBUTIONS WERE SIGNIFICANT TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NORTHEAST TEXAS. STAFFING, HOURS OF OPERATION, AND VISITATION ARE CONSISTENT WITH THOSE REPORTED IN 4A.


THE FARMSTEAD FACILITY PROVIDES INSIGHT AND EDUCATION AS TO RURAL LIFE IN THIS AREA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY. IT INCLUDES A FULLY FURNISHED FARMHOUSE, BARN, GARDEN (SEASONAL), AND BLACKSMITH DISPLAY. OPERATION HOURS ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE OTHER TWO FACILITIES. STAFFING IS PROVIDED BY ONE PAID FACILITY MANAGER AND MULTIPLE VOLUNTEERS. THIS FACILITY IS NORMALLY VISITED BY APPROXIMATELY 750 PEOPLE, INCLUDING NUMEROUS SCHOOL GROUPS, EACH YEAR.
